Civil Rights Movement

Introduction

Sometimes someone says something so amazing that it goes down in hostory. The Civil Rights Memorial’s beautiful black granite wall includes a quote from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.The following line quoted by Dr. King during his “I Have a Dream” speech. It reflects his belief that we must keep working to ensure equal rights for everyone. “Until justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream”

Task

Students will think about what they might say to express a similar sentiment about something they are adamant about. The best quotes are short and to the point. Students will create their own quote to be placed on the Civil Rights Memorial wall. Students will associate their quote with an organization they make up. Students will express the values and actions of this organization.

Process

Is there something you are adamant? Think about something that nobody could ever change your mind about, and imagine that something being illegal or impossible for you to have/do in your life. What would you do? To express this you need to do the following;

  1. You will be assigned to small groups in order to discuss possible options
  2. Come up with an idea of something you and your group value most in your lives
  3. Create a quote/slogan to express your sentiment toward you idea
  4. Create the name of an organization associated with your quote and sentimental subject
  5. Be able to express the approach your organization will take toward fighting for your group's sentimental subject by answering the following;
    1. Is your group violent/nonviolent
    2. What tactics will your group use either violent or nonviolent in order to make progress toward getting your rights to your sentimental subject
    3. What does your organization hope to achieve in it's actions?

Evaluation

Students will be assessed by their answers and elaborations concerning the meaning of their group. Students will not be assessed by what they choose as far as their subject or methods. As long as the students express their ideas in this activity then their evaluation will be on the presentation of their materials only.

Conclusion

Once the students have completed this WebQuest they will have created an idea similar to that of civil rights in the Civil Rights Movement. Now that the students have came up with their idea they will be able to compare and contrast their idea to the actual Civil Rights Movement.
