The Civil Rights Movement

Introduction

Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, these are just a few of the major leaders that impacted the Civil Rights Movement. Throughout this project you will explore each of these leaders and their impact on our lives today. Imagine what life would be like if you were there during the marches that Martin Luther King held, atteded one of his inspiring speaches, or on the bus when Rosa Parks refused to get up!

For this project you will have the opportunity to put yourself back in time and create a news report for one of the major Civil Rights Movement events.

Be creative, think critically, work collaboratively, and have fun!

Task

You will have the opportunity to read several different true stories that took place during the Civil Rights Movement.

Your group will choose a major even that occured during the Civil rights movement and create a news report on a specific important event. Your news report will be a video recording conducted just as a news report you would see on television today, including interviews, and statements of facts that truly happened.

Your group is encouraged to be creative, and research throughly.

Process

1. Students will be assigned groups of 3 to 5 students.

2. Groups will have the opportunity to choose from 5 major events:

  • Rosa Parks refusing to give up her seat
  • Martin Luther Kings I have a dream speech
  • Martin Luther Kings march on Washington
  • Martin Luther Kings assassination
  • Martin Luther Kings march in Birmingham

Each group must choose a different event!

3. Once the group has chosen their event you must assign each member a role.

  • one reporter
  • one interviewer
  • one person to be interviewed
  • camera man
  • card holder ( cards are posters with the words the reporters will read)

4. Now begin your research about your event. Read the following texts:

Martin’s Big Words by Doreen Rappaport

The Story of Ruby Bridges by Robert Coles

Dave the Potter by Laban Carrick Hill

Conclusion

After completing this project I want you to understand how it felt to be apart of a world where blacks and whites were not treated equally. I want you to truly understand the importance of Martlin Luther King Jr and Rosa Parks. I want you to imagine what life would be like today if those important leaders did not exsist.
