Introduction

Every child loves to read, however some genres of books may be more favored than others. It is important students have a general understanding of the different genres. This week the student will spend time as a group learning about four of the different genres of children’s books they then will be responsible for creating a poster project and presenting it to the classroom.
Task
Monday: The students will learn basic characteristic of fairytales and do a quick write, writing their own fairytale!
Tuesday: The students will learn basic characteristics of a mystery and they will participate in their own scavenger hunt within the classroom!
Wednesday: The students will learn basic characteristics of a poem and create their own “About Me Poem”
Thursday: The students will learn basic characteristics of a folktale
and as a group identify themes and lessons to multiple stories
Friday: the students will go to library and choose a book. They then will be responsible for creating a poster presentation and presenting it to the class.
Process

Monday: Begin discussion about the first genre that is Fairytales. Read the children’s book “Cinderella” to the class then show the video on elements of a fairytale and have students take notes. Discuss the video and the story as a whole. Ask questions. Students should be able to name all of the elements discussed in the video as well as be able to tie them into the book that was read. To conclude the lesson, have the students go back to their seats and write their own version of a fairytale. This should quick write. 15 minutes maximum. Under the "Teacher's Page" tab is a link to the Elements of a Fairytale video as well as a link to an example of my quick write that can be shared with the students.
Tuesday: Begin Genre two which is mystery. Read one of the children’s “Nate the Great” stories. Discuss the story and the characteristics that make a story fall under a mystery (detective, trying to solve something, usually a death or theft occurs at some point.) We will finish the lesson by having the class participate in a scavenger hunt in the classroom where they will become their own detective.
Wednesday: Begin Genre three which is poems. Read a few of the poems for the book “Where the Sidewalk Ends “and the children’s book “Parts”. After reading discuss some of the characteristics that fall under the genre poems and have the students go back to their seats and create a short poem about them.
Thursday: Discuss the last genre which is Folktales. Read the story to them “The Tortoise and the Hare.” Discuss characteristic of Folktales (have a moral or teach a lesson, explain how something came to be, characters in folktales are usually animals or people, usually a character in a folktale must face an impossible test. etc.) To end the lesson read two more Folktales and see if the students are able to predict what the moral of the story was.
Friday: Go down to the library and have the students find a story they enjoy. They then will come back to the classroom and construct a post that consists of:
1.)The title of the book
2.)The genre it falls under
3.) 5 characteristics or facts that they
learned about that genre during the week
4.) Why it is their favorite genre
5.) An illustration (this could be the cover of your
book you chose or something completely on your own ideas)
They will then present this to the class and receive a grade. Students are provided white poster paper, markers, crayons etc. and are expected to have a fun colorful presentation.
