Chickenpox (Varicella). Year 5/6

Introduction

Chickenpox is a highly contagious infection caused by the varicella virus. It is a common illness in daycares and schools but can be reduced through the correct use of preventative strategies in school and at home.

(Department of Health and Human Services (State Government of Victoria), 2015).

Task

In groups of 2 or 3, you are required to complete a presentation on chickenpox. This could be designed as a powerpoint or informative poster.

Once the presentations are completed, you will share your presentation with the classroom and any interesting information that you found.

In your presentation, you may choose to include information on:

  • What is chickenpox?
  • What are the signs and symptoms?
  • Is it easily spread?
  • How is it spread?
  • How long does it last?
  • Which age groups are typically affected?
  • What are the treatment options?
  • How can chickenpox be prevented?
  • What are the complications of chickenpox?
  • Is it a common disease?
  • What time of the year are outbreaks more common?

Assessment

Throughout this project, you will be formatively assessed. This means I will be assessing your engagement in the task and group work throughout the lesson. I will also be assessing your final presentation. I will be assessing group, research skills, design of presentation and also your contribution to the presentation. Therefore, you will be assessed as a group but also individually, as each individual in the group must equally contribute.

Conclusion

This project has enabled students to work in small groups to research a viral disease, including, the symptoms, treatment options, short-term and long-term implications and also preventative strategies for the school and general community. By completing this tasks students have utilised inquiry-based learning skills, teamwork and they also have had the opportunity to design using their preffered way of presenting the information.
