Traffic movement and public transport are the biggest issues facing Jakarta. Along with growing poor health of its residents.

Housing is a big problem in Jakarta due to the rapid population growth and temporary housing needing replacing. The government has programmes to help with this that improves public facilities called the Kampung Improvement Programme.

Many inhabitants of Jakarta use ground water for drinking which is declining as the piped drinking system is inadequate. The sewage system is unable to cope with the cities rapid growth and the transport system is unable deal with the large number of travellers.

The Governor of Jakarta closed the city as a policy to reduce the number of migrants entering the city. The government has also aimed
to move new residents to the east and west where growth can occur.

Innovative ways of dealing with Jakarta’s issues include:

Air pollution - the government has implemented a number of significant reforms over the past 20 years including the development of an urban pollution management plan, significantly reducing the open burning of rubbish (a major contributor to air pollution in 1994), taken old smoky vehicles off the streets, and started the process of de-leading petrol.

Public transport congestion - TransJakarta was designed to provide Jakarta citizens with a fast public transportation
system to help reduce rush hour traffic. The buses run in dedicated lanes and ticket prices are subsidized by the regional government to encourage public use.

Waste water management – Clean up Jakarta is a campaign designed to reduce the amount of waste water entering Jakarta’s waterways.
