Introduction
This webquest will focus on the study of Borneo, including palm oil
plantations, land conversion, climate change, wildlife hunting and trade, water and mining.
Students will look at how science knowledge has
helped us understand the effect of these actions on the environment.
They will also investigate the use of
sustainable palm oil.
What is different about how this palm oil is farmed?
How has scientific knowledge informed this?
Students will also develop information systems to communicate to others
about the effect of non-sustainable palm oil and not using these palm oil
products.
Students will write to Nutella or other manufacturers to ask about their decision to change to sustainable
palm oil in their products.
Students might suggest a national labelling system, schoolwide awareness program or write
letters to companies.
