Introduction
There are a lot of good reasons to be vegetarian and/or vegan, and I am very much in support of being vegetarian or vegan for any of the following reasons:
Health: It is significantly better for your health.
Environment: It is also significantly better for the environment.
Animal rights: There are a lot of factory farms that mistreat meat producing animals and dairy cows.
Workers rights: There are also often poor working conditions for workers, although I would suggest improving working conditions to solve this one rather than vegetarianism- people still need to work, and taking away one bad job does not mean that workers will be supplied with a good one in return.
To learn more about any of these reasons, do a simple search for vegetarianism, and you will be bombarded with web sites that list the benefits of a vegetarian and/or vegan lifestyle.
I myself have made lifestyle changes after learning about these reasons, and I am currently what I would call "50% Vegan". This means that I eat no more than one serving of either meat or dairy (or a combination as long as it is less than one serving) per day plus whatever small additives are found in primarily non-meat or dairy foods (such as the tiny bit of dairy- whey- in margarine). When I was feeding myself (buying my own food and cooking my own meals) I was on a "90% Vegan" diet- no more than one serving of meat or dairy per week plus whatever small additives are found in primarily non-meat or dairy foods. These are my own, made up terms, intended to describe my dietary changes. If you are planning on going vegan or vegetarian, you might find these to be useful intermediary steps in your lifestyle transition.
There is one very bad reason for being vegetarian, which is, unfortunately, one frequently cited by those who adopt the vegetarian lifestyle: Not killing animals.
Why do people cite this reason, and what's wrong with it?
