Introduction
We are currently reading Fahrenheit 451 as a class. This book is one of the most challenged and banned books in America. In this WebQuest, you will work in groups to pick a banned book and create a mini-presentation. Presentations will take place at the end of class.
Task
In your groups, you will be assinging roles. You will need two researchers, one recorder, and one speaker. Speaker should also help with the researching process! As a group you will use http://www.ala.org/bbooks/top-100-bannedchallenged-books-2000-2009 or the book Banned in the U. S. A. found at the front of the room. you will pick a book to research. YOUR GROUP MUST BE GIVEN THE GREEN LIGHT BY MISS CARTER OR MS. DEWITT BEFORE YOU MAY GO ANY FURTHER!!! Once you are given the green light, you will find out the process of banning a book, when and where the book was banned, and who wanted it banned. Once the research for this is done, decide if you group would ban the book and why or why not. If your goup has conflicting views on this, be sure to include both sides. The speaker will be presenting all of this at the end of class.
Process
Step 1: After finding a group, got to http://www.ala.org/bbooks/top-100-bannedchallenged-books-2000-2009 or use the book Banned in the U.S.A. to decide on a book for your group to research. There will be some books that we will not allow you to use for this webquest, so you must get permission to proceed further. Please raise your hand when your group decides on a book. BOOK SERIES COUNT AS ONE BOOK AS THE WHOLE SERIES IS WHAT IS BEING CHALLENGED
Step 2: Now that you have your book, assign roles. You will need:
- 1 speaker (will also help with researching the book)
- 1 recorder
- 2 researchers
Be sure to identify who has each role as we come around to each group.
Step 3:Research the following for your presentation:
- What is the process of banning a book? What is the process that the book you are researching went through?
- When and where was your book banned?
- Why was your book banned or challenged?
- Would your group ban your book? Why or why not? Is there anyone in your group that thinks the opposite of that?
Step 4: The speaker will present your findings toward the end of class.
