Sponges – fragmentation

1. What is a sponge made of?

2. Explain what fragmentation means.

3. Will each individual cell form into a new sponge?

4. Do sponges have tissues?

5. How does this form of reproduction create an advantage for a sponge?

Coral, anemone – budding

1. What does budding mean?

2. Why is this type of reproduction an advantage for an anemone?

3. Are the parent and offspring genetically alike?

4. Can coral and anemone reproduce sexually as well?

Starfish – regeneration

1. What part of the starfish must be present for regeneration to work?

2. If fisherman cut starfish in half because they are stuck on their nets, what are they effectively doing?

3. Do you think starfish would normally reproduce in this manner? Why or why not?

4. Define regeneration for starfish.

5. Planaria – flatworms – also regenerate on their own, what type of environmental conditions

would create this situation?

Bacteria – fission

1. What does fission mean?
