Task
PREPARATION FOR YOUR TASK!
To prepare for this important task you and your partner will require some very special skills. Have a look at the dot points below to make sure that you and your partner as achitects can complete the assignment succcessfully.
1. You will need a very good understandimng of area and perimeter. This includes millimetres, centimeters, metres as well as metres squared.
2. You will also need to have a good grasp of addition and multiplication to calculate the area of the house and room.
3. You will need to reseach and inquire into different types of flooring to suit different rooms. This includes the kitchesn, bedrooms and living areas. Some suggestions include wood floors, laminate and carpet (here are many more!)
4. How much fencing you need is important! It can help secure your home and look after your pets!
5. A final floor plan of your home is needed as your submission. Research floor plans on sites such as domain.com and realestate.com.au to assist you in your design and dimensions.
Process
On your internet capable device – Chrombook or iPad is suitable.

Click on attached hyperlink to the website Area Explorer
- Read the directions on the website carefully.
- Use the examples given to practise finding the area of several different figures.
- Ask Mr. Allum for some graph paper and copy your favourite figure onto graph paper. Label its area. You may wish to use the app Graph paper (available in the app store).
Now go to the website Perimeter Explorer
- Read the directions on the website carefully.
- Practise finding the perimeter of several figures. You may wish to use a calculator to check your answers
- Copy your favourite figure on graph paper. Label its perimeter. Again you can use the Graph paper app if you choose.
Go to House Design
- Watch and assist the builders as they work out the perimeter and area of the rooms in Anna’s house. You may also choose to use the app House design (payment needed so ask permission from a parent!)
Still need a little more practice? Head to Perimeter and Area
- Carefully read the explanations and instructions.
- Complete Level 1 of the Perimeter and Area questions.
Fast Finisher? Feeling confident? Click on the Zoo Challenge or Party Challenge.
Well Done! You are now an official Dream Designer Architect!
At home:
- Measure the length and width of your bedroom and one other room in your house. Record your measurements to the nearest metre. (You are welcome to borrow a tape measure from school if you need!)
- Calculate the area and perimeter of the 2 rooms you measured.
In the classroom with your partner:
Planning and designing:
- Compare the measurements you gathered at home.
- Make a list of the rooms you would need to include in your dream house.
- List the extra rooms you would like to include in your dream house.
- Draw a rough sketch of your floor plan, considering where certain rooms would be placed. Your house will need to be on one level and no larger than 400 square metres.
- Consider which rooms would need to be larger than others. Be able to justify why.
- Show and discuss your plan with one other pair and Mr. Allum.
Designing and making:
- Once you are happy with your plan, draw your design on 1cm grid paper. Remember (1cm = 1m).
- Include one room that has an area of 12 square metres and another room that has a perimeter of 14 metres.
- Colour code your rooms to show those which would need carpet and those needing another type of flooring (eg. tiles).
- Calculate the area of each room that would need carpet. Add these together to find the total area of carpet needed.
- Draw a fence around the backyard. Work out how much fencing you will need by working out the perimeter.
Going a step further:
- Investigate how much carpet costs in order to work out the expense of placing carpet in the rooms of your house.
- Investigate the cost of fencing and work out the total price of your building your backyard's fence.
Evaluation
Sharing Your Design
Share your design with the class. Be prepared for your teacher to ask you questions about the process of creating your design and your thinking along the way.

Evaluating others' designs
Stick your design on the whiteboard display. On a post it note, write "2 Stars and a Wish" for another group's design. Post it on their work. the 2 stars represent things you love about their work and the wish represents something you would have liked in their design.

Reflecting on your design
In a googledoc (Shared to Mr. Allum) answer the following quesions; If you were to complete this task again...
- What would you keep?
- What would you try?
- What might you change?

Conclusion
To work out how successful you were wuith the task, lets look back at the descripion we began with.
1. Did your understandimng of area and perimeter help you with the tasks?
2. How accurate was your addition and multiplication when calculating the area of the house and room?
3. How much did the inquiry and researchhelp you with your flooring to suit different rooms?
5. Could your final floor plan of your home ibe used on professional websites?
