Introduction
You have just finished reading the book, On My Honor. In the book you read about two boys, Tony and Joel who decided to swim in the Vermillion River instead of climbing the bluffs at Starved Rock. The Vermillion River is described in rather unflattering detail by Joel, who notes that it is quite polluted. Pollutants are chemicals that get released into the environment that has the ability to cause great harm to the environment and people's health.
What types of pollutants might be present in the river?
How do these toxins come to be a part of the river water?
What can be done to prevent further deterioration of a polluted aquatic environment?

Now that you have completed your research, you are going to apply what you know by taking a little field trip. We are going down to the stream at the entrance of Hudson Elementary School. While there you are going to observe the stream and its surroundings. While there you are going to collect data and write down your observations.
Once complete we will come back as a class and discuss your findings.
-Is the stream polluted?
-If it is polluted, what are the pollutants?
-Where do you think they came from?
-What can you do to prevent further pollution?
