Agriculture Career Science Investigatoin

Introduction

This experimental-learning career development event is designed to emphasize career exploration and integration of academics. Learing activities will focus on: agricultural literacty, career exploartion, personal development, and integration of academics.  Participation in this activitiy is also designed to fulfill the SAE component of middle school FFA membership.

The scenario for the event will be on a rotational basis as follows:

2016- Growing Food Under the Ocean

The U.S. Navy and USDA are cooperating to select a team of agricultural scientists to research systems for growing food on under the ocean. Establishing a viable food system under the ocean is a critical step in their goal to establish undersea colonies. Your goal is to be selected as the research team that will travel to the undersea base.

2017 - Growing Food on Mars

NASA and USDA are cooperating to select a team of agricultural scientists to research systems for growing food on Mars. Establishing a viable food system on Mars is a critical step in their goal to colonize Mars. Your goal is to be selected as the research team that will travel to Mars.

Task

  1. Rules for Ag CSI.
  2. Each team member will conduct a job-shadow of a person employed in the agricultural industry:
    1. A job-shadow of the selected role play career is advised but not required.
    2. The job shadow must be a minimum of thirty (30) minutes.
    3. Complete the one (1) page “Job Shadow” Worksheet and include it with the written report
  3. Each team will prepare up to a research proposal in a concise bulleted outline format describing the team’s plans to address the scenario:
    1. Cover page is optional
    2. Up to three (3) pages for the written report Typed and double spaced
    3. Ten (10) or twelve (12) pt font
    4. One inch (1”) minimum page margins
    5. One (1) page bibliography attached to the back of the proposal
  4. When you are concluded with your paper you will submit the paper to Mrs. Enyart VIA email.
    1. Your Job Profile sheets should be at the bottom of the paper and all on one document when it is completed.
  5. From here you need to create a presentations that will be given to the class.  This presentation will need to last 11-12 minutes.  You will be explaining why your team should be chosen to research this great venture.
    1. You should also be prepared to answer  up to 5 minutes of questions from you class.
Process
  1. Students should work as a group, brainstorming careers that would be fitting for research in this area.
    1. Each team member needs to have one career for the research project.
    2. When all groups are ready we will have an interview day in the class.  (Members of the community will come in for students to have an interview with so you can create your Job Profile Interview from this experience)
  2. (Lesson on sourcing material correctly) Bibliography: Creating this is very important; all information that you find about your project should be logged in your bibliography. (If you are researching in class and you do not have time to correctly complete the bibliography on that day make sure you saved the webpage so you can revert back to the page.)
    1. Teams may want to address the following issues, however teams are free to change or add to this list of problems: (Under the Ocean)
      1. If chosen for the mission, what specific experiments would your team conduct?
      2. Why would you conduct the experiments?
      3. What unique scientific problems will need to be solved to complete the mission?
      4. What agricultural product(s) will you attempt to grow on under the ocean?
      5. How with the respective team members work together to complete the mission?
    2. Teams may want to address the following issues, however teams are free to change or add to this list of problems:  (On Mars)
      1. If chosen for the mission, what specific experiments would your team conduct?
      2. Why would you conduct the experiments?
      3. What unique scientific problems will need to be solved to complete the mission?
      4. What agricultural product(s) will you attempt to grow on Mars?
      5. How with the respective team members work together to complete the mission?

( Lesson on summarizing by using a bulleted format) Each student should be researching information related to their career for the project.  All information that you plan to cover in your presentation needs to be completed in a bulleted format before compiling your paper. You may want to put it in paragraph form and then make it into bulleted form. (This process will by far take the longest to complete).

  3. Compile your paper, bibliography and job profile sheets as a group.
  4. Create your presentations.  BE CREATIVE!!!!!!! (Present to the class)
