Adaptation and Survival in Plants Inquiry

Task

Plants have survival techniques that are present even as a sprout. We will explore two of these techniques through experiments, asking questions and finding the answers.

Your task is to:

1. Research what plants need for survival,

2. Discover how gravity effects how a sprout grows underground,

3. Discover how and why light causes plant stems to bend toward it,

4. Observe and ask questions.

You will be broken up into two groups: group 1 is the Radish Sprouts and group 2 are the Bean Plants.  The groups will be doing separate experiments and afterwards presenting their findings to the other group.

The presentation will include your original scientific questions, the experiement process and questions that arose during that time, and your findings from the experiment and researching any questions left.  You will be journaling through this entire process.

Presentation will need to include:

  • Poster
  • Data from experiment
  • Sample plant from experiment
  • Processes of answering your questions

This is a two week progect, so let's get started!

Process

How to get started.

1. Ask yourself: What do I already know about plants?

2. What do plants need to survive?

3. Radish Sprouts ask: How do sprouts know to grow up and the roots down?

Bean Plants ask: How and why does light effect how a plant grows?

4. Break the two groups up into smaller groups of 4 persons per group.

5. Conduct experiement.

6. Observe, ask questions and collect data.

7. Write rubric.

8. Begin presentation.

9. Present to the class.

Evaluation

The rubic will be written by the entire class, and will need to include:

  • Journal entries
  • Data collection
  • Time management
  • Presentation
  • Demonstrates knowledge of plant survival.
