Activity 1 plate tectonics

Introduction

Website #1 ( Canadian website) www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca
What is this page about?
This page has a diagram and information about plate tectonics. The diagram shows what the world used to look like 320 million
years ago. It shows how much plate tectonics can change and explains how the shifting can cause earthquakes. It shows the history
aboout it which started 500 years ago.It shows continental drift which is about how all the continents were one and how the are all
seperated now. It talks about Seismology and the Earth's interior which is about earthquakes and explains where earthquakes
happen the most and describes how the earth is made. As well as an overview of plate tectonics.
what specific information should be looked at?
The specific information that should be looked at is the diagram because it gives a good representation of how the plates can
move over a certain amount of years, as well as the overview of plate tectonics because it gives you an idea of the important
information you need to know in a paragraph.
I think that the diagram is an important because it shows how the plates have moved over that last 300 million years to make the
world how it looks today. It shows that it could also change significantly. The overview of plate tectonics is also a very important part
in this page because it tells you a little bit about everything and it shows you that many things have changed.
website #2: earthquakescanada.nrcan.gc.ca (canadian website)
What is this page about?
This page talks about earthquakes, volcanoes and plate boundaries. This website gives many diagrams to show you the earths
core, plate boundaries, where earthquakes and volcanoes are most common, typees of plate tectonics and the subduction zone.
They have paragraphs talking about many things but it is fairly simple for people who are just learning about it.
What specific information should be looked at?
I think people who go on this website should be looking at the part at the bottom where it tells you the 3 plate tectonics
convergent, divergent and strike-slip or transform. I think that is important because it gives you detailed information but easy to
understand. For people who don't know much about plate tectonics I think this would be a great website.
I think the diagrams are important because it is easy to understand, they are detailed and they are a good representation. It is
also good because it shows you where the main earthquakes and volcanoes are which is very good to know.
website 3: earthobservatory.sg
What is this page about?
This page is about the history and the theory of the plate tectonics. They talk about the observations that scientist Alfred
Wegener had seen. He talks about the continental drift and made a book about it.They talk about the plate tectonics and how they
move.
What specific information should be looked at?
I think the last two paragraphs are very important because you can click on the words "motion of tectonic plates" and it will tell
about it which is very important. They also tell you about the subduction process and they also give you a diagram of the
subduction process and the tectonic plates.
I think the diagrams are very important because it shows you alll the names of the plates and the subduction arrows. It also
gives you around three paragraphs about the tectonic plates and three paragraphs about the subduction process which is very
helpful to know.
website 4: livescience.com
What is this page about?
This page is about plate tectonics, plate boundaries and reconstructing the past. It has two diagrams. One diagram is about the
plate tectonics, where they are and what the names are called and the other one is about the main types of plate boundaries like
the hotspot, transform plate boundary and different types of volcanoes
What specific information should be looked at?
I think that they should be looking at reconstructing the past because it tells you many interesting things that you wouldn't get
on many sites. It tells you how old the earth is, how old the oldest seafloor is, how old the oldest ocean rock is and that 300 million
years ago all the continents were all close together and when the tectonic plates moved there are fossils and rocks. That was the
first hint that the continents have moved.
I think that telling us about the history of the earth and how they figured out it moved was a cool thing to learn about and I think
that is an important thing to learn about the earth's history.
