Introduction

The point of this history lesson is to teach my students the events in local history which can be shown on timelines organize by years, decades and centuries. You as a student  will be researching two presidents and will create a timeline of history and understanding the roles of being in office. By the end of the project, you should be responsible knowing the information of two presidents and the life they have lived.

For Teachers:

A web quest is a lesson format in which information comes from the web. A web quest can be created using various programs, including a simple word processing document that includes links to websites. This is created to show students grades 3-5 the history of the Unites States through the presidents. By the end of this assignment, students will know how to put together a timeline and learn how to find specific areas about the two presidents there were assigned to do. The purpose behind this was designed after the Ohio Department of Education standards. The topic was: Social Studies.

The student will be working independently searching the president they were assigned. This lesson should be creative, fun, and informative to the students. Students will be given plenty of resources to use to find their information. The websites that will be provided have tons of information, images, games, diagrams and fun quizzes to practice see if they can remember the information on their own. At the end of this assignment they should learn how to be creative by putting a timeline together and to be comfortable speaking in front of other students about their own project.

Task

This webquest was created to show students 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade to learn about the U.S. presidents. It can be involved in any third-fifth grade classroom according to the Ohio Department of Education standards.

Ohio Department of Education

Model Curriculum: Grade 3

OHIO’S NEW LEARNING STANDARDS I: Social Studies

This topic focuses on U.S history. It is a focal point for third grade students to begin to understand how their communities have changed over time and to make comparisons with communities in other places. They can learn the history by having it come alive through the use of artifacts and documents.

  1. Events in local history can be shown on timelines organized by years, decades and centuries.
  2. Primary sources such as artifacts, maps and photographs can be used to show change over time.
  3. Local communities change over time.

This webquest will be teaching students about the U.S. Presidents. Each student will be graded independently on the information they traced. Students will also be graded on the creativity of their timeline they put together and how well it is understood and presented to the class. This type of assessment is a summative assessment. Summative assessments are cumulative evaluations used to measure student growth after a lesson.

Process

WHAT IS TO BE ACCOMPLISHED?

The first thing you will be doing is be given two U.S. presidents. Every student is responsible for creating a timeline with color and LOTS of creativity. After you researchyour presidentt, you will be in charge of having two pictures of the two presidents they were givens and to give details on their lives. I will be grade you for having the correct information and for presenting them to the class. (A rubric will be provided).

At the beginning you will be in charge of watching a video of all 44 the presidents the U.S. has ever had.

Task 1:

After watching the video, you will be in charge of putting a timeline of ALL the presidents in order. [video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fT6IP39uq6o] The video being provided will state which number the president was, the amount of time in office and the major events that president has done. Once the timeline was created you can move on to number 2.

Task 2:

After task 1, you will begin to explore the two presidents they were assigned. You should start looking at the roles of which that person did in office. http://www.usa4kids.com/presidents/ This shows each individual and after you select one, it will provided you with the information I am looking for, terms served, number president they were, party they were involved in, who was the first lady, born and died, and two interesting facts about the individual. http://mrnussbaum.com/presidents/

Task 3:

Now you as students will be in charge of putting together a report about the individual you were given. With the information you have researched, you will be putting together two paragraphs (one about each person) about the information being requested.
