The 5 W's of Reporting Bullying

Colorado Content Writing Standards 1-4

Students will be able to write a self reflection and ellborate on real life experiences according to bullies.  Students will also be able to re-enact a situation from situations that were talked about in their D.A.R.E. lesson with Officer Chrisite.

Bullying situations usually involve more than the bully and the victim. They also involve bystanders—those who watch bullying happen or hear about it.

An important new strategy for bullying prevention focuses on the powerful role of the bystander. Depending on how bystanders respond, they can either contribute to the problem or the solution. Bystanders rarely play a completely neutral role, although they may think they do.

Task

The task for this WebQuest will mostly individually based work. The reason for this is because a lot of the work is self-reflection writing and note taking in a graphic organizer. At the end, you will be assigned into groups of three and will act out a situation of someone being bullied, and what someone should say to stop that bullying.

Individually, you will be graded on how much of your graphic organizer is filled out, and your written self-reflections.  As a group you will be graded on how well you worked with others, and how organized and accurate your advice for the bullying situation was.

Process

The following tasks are arranged in the order in which they will be completed.

Obtain a graphic organizer from your Keepin’ it Real D.A.R.E. book.  You will find the graphic organizer on pg. 24, The 5 W’s of Reporting Bullying.

The next task you will complete will need to do complete is web based.  You will need to click on each of the links in the order they appear.  Each website will give great information about bullying and how to prevent a bully situation at your school or in your classroom.  Given the advice in each website/video, complete The 5 W’s Reporting Bullying assignment in your D.A.R.E. book.

After completing step 2, you will get your writing folder and start writing your   self-reflections.  You will have two writing assignments.  They are listed below.

  • Write a reflection on a time that you were bullied.  Did you feel sad that bullying goes on? Write about how you felt about the information you found on the websites that were assigned.

  • Write a reflection about a time that YOU were being a bully.  Describe the situation and then write about what you would do differently now that you have research some techniques on anti-bullying.  Why did you do it?  If you could, would you apologize? Do you feel badly, and wish you wouldn’t have done it at all?

After completing both of your writing assignments, you will start your group work with three to four classmates.  You need your Keepin’ it Real D.A.R.E. book and your group will be working on pgs. 25-26.  You will complete all four situations given.

When your group has completed their group work, I will call each group up to act out one of the four situations you have just completed in your book.  In each group there will be three definite roles: the bully, the student being bullied, and the stopper.  Be creative and be prepared to act out any of the four situations you have completed! Good Luck and have fun!

Conclusion

Growing up is hard enough without being the target of a bully.  The more you look into this problem, the more you will realize it is an important issue that needs to be addressed.  You have become a problem-solver to help your classmates.  As your classmates watch and anaylze your situations, I hope it helps them solve the many problems that so many bullied students face.

I found this webQuest extremely helpful when I did not know what direction I wanted to go when I started my webQuest. I knew I wanted to design something that would help my students not only in the health class aspect but also what they were learning about in their D.A.R.E. instructiion.  Although my project and the webQuest listed above are quiet different the content that was provided helped stir me in the direction I wanted to go, which was anti-bullying.

This webQuest seemed familiar to me! I had once given my students an assignment where they had to make a brochure for a sport they liked and they had to sell that sport to me in order for me to play it! This webQuest took the same idea of a brochure and had their students make an anti-bullying brochure.  I loved this because of the creativity it allowed the students to display and I love when the teachers give the students a voice, especially on such a sensitive subject.  The guience this webQuest gave me was through the writing portion and standards was a great help.
