Slavery is the act owning other people. People who are owned by others are called slaves. Enslaved people are responsible for working for their owners. They have to do whatever they are asked to do. In the past, slavery was legal in many parts of the world. Today, slavery is considered illegal or against the law. People can become slaves in numerous waves. Some are born into slavery because their parents were already slaves. Others are captured during wars or invasions. There are some famous slaves who are known for their work. African American slavery was a devastating time in history. Many African Americans became famous after escaping from slavery and helping otthers escape.
