WebQuest: Exploring Open Educational Resources (OERs)

Introduction

Imagine a world where learning is accessible to everyone, everywhere—without barriers or high costs. Online educational resources (OERs) make this possible, empowering students and teachers to discover, create, and share knowledge freely. In this activity, you will explore a selected OER, understand its educational value, and reflect on how it can support teaching and learning in your context. Get ready to become a digital explorer in the world of open education!

Task

Your task is to select an Open Educational Resource (OER) such as Khan Academy, OpenStax, or another reputable platform. You will research its features, purpose, and educational benefits. Your end product will be a detailed post that includes the OER’s name, founding organization, establishment date, link, and an analysis of its educational value—specifically how it supports meaningful, constructivist, and learner-centered education. You will then share your post in the class forum and review others’ contributions.

Process
  1. Choose an OER: Select one from the list provided or find a reputable OER online.
  2. Research: Visit the website, explore its features, and gather information about its founding organization, establishment date, and purpose.
  3. Write your post: Include the following details—name, founder, time period, link, and educational value (how it supports meaningful, constructivist learning).
  4. Share your post: Submit your work in the designated forum under "Assignment 8 OER Master List."
  5. Review others: Read at least two other posts and reflect on how different OERs support learning.

Conclusion

Conclusion

This activity encourages you to explore the rich world of OERs through the lens of educational theories from "Theories of Learning.pdf." Reflecting on how these resources support meaningful, constructivist, and learner-centered education helps you understand their value in fostering autonomous and motivated learners. Sharing your findings and reviewing peers’ work will deepen your understanding of innovative teaching tools and their impact on education.

Lesson Title: Exploring Open Educational Resources (OERs) through Learning Theories

Grade Level: Middle High School

Subject Area: Education, Technology, Curriculum Development

Duration: 1-2 class periods (or as assigned)

Lesson Objectives:

  • Students will identify and analyze various OER platforms such as Khan Academy and OpenStax.
  • Students will connect the features of OERs to key educational theories outlined in "Theories of Learning.pdf" (Behaviorist, Cognitive, Constructivist, Social Learning).
  • Students will critically evaluate how OERs support meaningful, learner-centered, and constructivist approaches to education.
  • Students will develop digital literacy and reflection skills through research and peer review.

Preparation:

  • Familiarize yourself with the content of "Theories of Learning.pdf," especially the sections on Constructivism, Meaningful Learning, and Social Cognitive Theory.
  • Prepare the list of OERs (Khan Academy, OpenStax, etc.) and relevant links.
  • Set up the online platform or forum for student submissions and reviews.

Instructional Tips:

  • Introduction: Use the "Introduction" section as a way to energize students about the potential of open education and to connect with their prior knowledge of learning theories.
  • Guidance: Encourage students to think critically about how each resource aligns with specific theories, such as how Khan Academy’s interactive videos foster meaningful learning or how OpenStax’s adaptable content supports constructivist approaches.
  • Assessment: Use the provided rubric to evaluate student posts, ensuring they demonstrate understanding of both the platform and the educational theories.
  • Discussion: Facilitate a class discussion on how different OERs can be integrated into various teaching strategies aligned with the theories from the document.

Additional Notes:

  • Emphasize the importance of reflective thinking—students should articulate not just what the resource is, but how it supports specific learning principles.
  • Encourage students to explore beyond the provided resources if time permits, fostering inquiry and digital literacy skills.
  • Use peer reviews as an opportunity to promote constructive feedback and deeper understanding.

Assessment & Reflection:

  • Collect and review student posts using the rubric.
  • Use student reflections to assess understanding of how OERs can support theory-based teaching practices.
  • Consider integrating a follow-up activity where students design a lesson plan incorporating an OER aligned with a specific learning theory.
