Webquest EDUC

Introduction

Splish! Splash! Let’s learn about the water around us!

Have you ever wondered where water comes from? In this webquest, students will explore Earth's water through videos, activities, and discussions.

  1. Grade-level: First grade
  2. Time Frame (the length of the session): Two, 45-minute class periods
Task
  1. Purpose (why you are doing this activity, provide if necessary background info)

Students will have a chance to explore different types of water bodies and learn about their properties.

  1. Objectives (what your students will learn or will be able to do after completing this webquest activity)

The student will be able to:

  • Identify different bodies of water.
  • Compare the properties between each (ponds, rivers, lakes, oceans)
  • Learn about freshwater vs. saltwater
  1. Description: Write a brief description of the activities that the students will be doing.

Students will be introduced to different bodies of water. They will then engage in an interactive lesson by watching short videos and participating in group discussions/activities to compare and describe each. During the activity time, students will analyze images, create their own water scenes using manipulatives or other classroom objects, and write sentences comparing two bodies of water at a time.

Process
  1. List steps learners should accomplish
  • Understand the differences in bodies of water.
  • Students will discuss where water is found.
  • Watch videos and view images to differentiate each one.
  • Students will have the opportunity to draw and compare water sources.
  • Students will share what they learned.
  • Watch the short Youtube video about different bodies of water.
  • Look at the pictures of ponds, rivers, lakes, and oceans.
  1. Explain what the students will be doing to learn the lesson.

Students will be able to observe, discuss, draw, and share.

  1. What new tool will you be using and how?

We will be using YouTube to share videos so students can distinguish between water types.

Evaluation
  1. Describe the method you will evaluate your lesson (assessment)

The teacher will evaluate by observing. This includes students' drawings and participation in both discussions/activities. The student will be able to demonstrate their understanding by identifying various properties of water and distinguishing between freshwater and saltwater.

  1. List the rubric that you will use to evaluate (standards should be fair, clear, consistent, and specific to the task.

Criteria

3 - Meets

2- Developing

1 – Needs help

Identifies a property

Can name more than one property (wet, clear)

Can name at least one property

Is unable to name a property

Identifies water type

Can identify between freshwater and saltwater

Can identify some water types, whether freshwater or saltwater

Is unable to identify the water type

Drawing

The drawing shows a clear understanding of which one it is

The drawing shows some understanding

Drawing is unclear

Participation

The student actively participates in discussions/activities.

The student participates sometimes in discussions/activities.

The student does not participate.

  1. What activities will you be grading the students over?

Students will be graded on their answers in class discussions, participation, understanding, and drawings.

  1. What does your grade scale look like?

10-12 points = Excellent (90-100)

7-9 points = Good (80-89)

4-6 points = Developing (70-79)

0-3 points = Needs more support (Below 70)

Conclusion

1. Summarize your experience in creating the WebQuest planning sheet

This experience helped me understand how to create a lesson plan that is fun, engaging, and aligned with TEKS §112.3(b)(10)(C). It was a great learning experience that helped me to think about different ideas that would be engaging for a first-grade classroom. Ideas on what visuals or videos to use, discussions, and hands-on activities.
