Introduction
In this WebQuest, we will analyze the issue of displacement. We will look into why displacement is such an important issue that need to be taken seriously. People do not always choose to get displaced and displacement come with its own set of challenges. We will expound on the challenges that language minority students face.
Task
To complete this undertaking, the following tasks were carried out:
- Reading articles that give an insight into the phenomenon of displacement.
- Watching videos that discuss in detail the plight of displaced people and language minority students.
- Discussion with other students to get a different perspective on the topic of discussion.
- Researching on the issue that language minority student face.
Process
Refugees are people who have been forced to flee from their country due to various reasons. Some of these reasons include war, fear of persecution due to their religion, political opinion, or being members of a particular social group (“What is a Refugee?,” n.d.). When these refugee individuals flee their countries, they become immigrants in the countries where they flee to. In the countries they flee to, they become minorities. In many occasions, when policies are formulated, these minorities are always left out.
As such, professional organizations have been trying to bridge the gap created by lack of inclusion. Some of the responses that the professional organizations have been offering to displacement include monitoring the human rights of the internally displaced persons (IDPs) with special focus on women and children (Ferris, n.d.). The professional organizations also provide legal aid to the IDPs as well as conducting educational awareness programs. The awareness programs help sensitize the locals on the right way to treat the IDPs. Professional organizations also investigate and act on cases involving violation of IDPs human rights.
There are many issues that surround the issue displacement. One of the most outstanding issues revolving around displacement is the degeneration of humanitarian conditions. When the IDPs are displaced, they get settled in camps that are usually overcrowded. The element of overcrowding brings with it deterioration of sanitary conditions leading to the outbreak of diseases such as cholera (“The issues that come from protracted displacement,” 2019). Another issue that is associated with displacement is human rights violations. Local communities wage attack on the IDPs who they consider as intruders who compete with them for their resources. Deprival of basic human needs is the other issue that is associated with displacement. Normally, IDPs are usually settled in camps that do not offer enough shelter while food rations are usually inadequate.
Conclusion
There are various arguments regarding displacement. An example is that it can be pinpointed back to poor governance. In the case of displacement caused by stifle, there are underlying issues that can be addressed by good governance. When certain communities in a given country feel that their grievances are not being addressed, they may resort to violent tendencies. When violence erupts, individuals flee for their safety thus end up being IDPs. Proper governance can thus help address the issues that can drive people into violence as they strive to meet the needs that their governments do not provide. There is also the argument that governments have more resources that humanitarian organizations. As such, governments are expected to do more than organizations in terms of response.
The results, however, have not been commensurate with the main issues in displacement and the argument offered for it. Humanitarian organizations still take the leading role during response to displacement. One of the things that make this to be the case is that there may be individuals in governments that are responsible for the internal violence that cause displacement. It is thus evident that poor governance still continues to be one of the causes for displacement. As such, it is a challenge that is not going away anytime soon.
