Webquest 8: Food security and nutrition

Introduction

Through this WebQuest you will explore why global hunger persists despite abundant food production, focusing on issues like land access, financial constraints and nutrition. By researching these challenges and proposing solutions, you'll uncover how to address food security and make a real impact on global hunger.

Task

Through this WebQuest, students will:

  • explore the concept of food security, its dimensions and the factors affecting it.
  • investigate the relationship between nutrition and food security, focusing on how malnutrition and deficiencies impact individuals and communities.
  • examine current global challenges to achieving food security and good nutrition, including economic, social and environmental factors.
  • develop and propose strategies to address food security issues, emphasizing sustainable practices and targeted interventions.
  • enhance their skills in analysis, communication, and problem-solving, preparing them to contribute to solutions for global food security challenges.

Step 2: Team formation

Students will work in national teams, to research and create a presentation on Food Security and Nutrition. Within each team, members will be assigned specific roles, such as researcher, writer, designer and presenter.

Step 3: Create a presentation

The presentation should address the following guiding questions:

  1. What is Food Security and what are its four main dimensions?

  2. How does nutrition relate to food security?

  3. What are the current global challenges to achieving Food Security and good nutrition?

  4. What strategies can be implemented to improve food security and nutrition worldwide?

Teams will gather information, analyze data and present their findings in a clear and engaging way. Presentations must include visual aids such as graphs, charts and images to illustrate key points.

Students will design their presentation using Canva, ensuring it contains at least the following sections:

  • Introduction to Food Security

  • Dimensions of Food Security

  • The Role of Nutrition

  • Current Challenges

  • Proposed Solutions

  • Conclusion
