Webquest 39: Mediterranean Diet: Food Traditions through life cycle (birth, baptism, marriage, etc)

Introduction

The Mediterranean Diet is more than just a healthy way of eating; it is a way of life, deeply connected to the cultural traditions of Mediterranean countries. From birth to baptism, marriage and other celebrations, food has always played a central role in marking life’s milestones. In this WebQuest, you will explore the connection of the Mediterranean Diet with different stages of the life cycle and discover the symbolic meaning of these traditions that have been passed down through generations.

Task

Students will work in transnational team to explore the food traditions linked to the important life events (i.e. birth, baptism, marriage). They will investigate how food is used in these moments, what it symbolizes and how it reflects cultural values and finally create an interactive e-map that shows cultural food traditions across countries.

Process

Step 1- Group formation

During the Activity 'Nutrition Traditions in Lifecycle and Time' that will take place in Vranov nad Topl'ou (Slovakia), you will work in mixed transnational groups, each focusing on specific life cycle celebrations (birth, baptism, marriage, birthdays or other family milestones).

Step 2- Research and Discuss

  • Explore food traditions in your own country and in partner countries.
  • Collect stories, symbolic foods, rituals,  customs connected to the Mediterranean Diet.
  • Compare similarities and differences between countries.

This WebQuest was edited by teachers of Gymnázium Cyrila Daxnera vo Vranove nad Topľou (Slovakia), 1st EPAL Nafpaktou (Greece) and 2o Esperino EPAL Acharnon (Greece) as part of the activities of the "Mediterranean Diet for Overall Health" (MedDiet4Health) Erasmus+ project (Project number: 2023-2-EL01-KA210-VET-000183592).

By engaging in these activities, students not only gain theoretical knowledge about the Mediterranean Diet and its cultural significance across the life cycle, but also develop practical and transferable skills. They strengthen their research and analytical abilities by investigating traditions from different countries, and improve teamwork and intercultural communication through collaboration in transnational groups. The use of digital tools (i.e. e-maps) enhances their digital literacy, while presenting and discussing findings builds confidence in public speaking and critical thinking. Altogether, these experiences provide students with valuable competencies for their future careers in food technology, health, nutrition and related fields, while also fostering cultural awareness and respect for heritage.
