Question #1 = What were the Trench Defense System like? 3 pictures below...



#2 = Investigate each weapon of World War I...
Question #2 = How did industrialization alter artillery?
•No longer short-distance cannons
–Soldiers could only hunker down in their trenches and wait for the bombardments to end
–Night and day
•Allied troops nicknamed the German’s howitzers as “Big Bertha”
–The “Big Bertha” could hurl a 1,800 shell 75 miles
•Many soldiers suffered from “shell-shock”


Question #3 = How did machine guns transform warfare?
•One of the deadliest weapons
•Heavy = work in teams, set-up to defend trenches
-Some machine guns could spray 600 rounds of ammunition per minute
-Charges = death


Question #4 = Why was poison gas feared?
•Brand new weapon = most feared weapon
•The Germans were the first to do it in 1915
–Chlorine suffocated 2 French divisions in minutes
•Gas masks were issued to every soldier but were itchy, hot, and made breathing difficult
-Mustard gas = burned skin and eyes

Question #5 = How did aerial tactics with airplanes change?
•The first airplanes of the war were wooden
• Fighting airplanes were called "dogfights"
–Germany’s finest pilot became known as the Red Baron
•By the end of the war, airplanes advanced to being able to drop bombs on targets

Question #6 = Why were tanks built?
•The British had the first tanks
–Not very effective at first (more of a shield for soldiers)
•Running on caterpillar treads and built out of steel, tanks pushed forward across No Man’s Land and the machine gun fire

Evaluation

Question #7 = What other weapons did soldiers use in the trenches?
•Even if soldiers survived the artillery, made it across No Man’s Land, escaped the barb wire, mines, and machine guns to the enemy’s trench...
•Fighting turned to hand-to-hand combat which brutally involved bayonets, trench knives, trench clubs, punches, kicks, biting, and rocks
