Water Safety Practices

Introduction

Hello and welcome students!

Water is fun, we play in it, we swim in it and we even cool down in it. However, it can be vey dangerous if we do not follow the water safety rules. 

Today we will be learning about Water Safety. Along with the simple rules to keep us safe around water. In this lesson, you will learn how to be safe around water and even create your very own water safety poem!

Task

By the end of this lesson, each of you will:

  1. Know good water safety practices.

  2. Identify safe water behavior and unsafe water behavior

  3. Be able to explain what “water safety” means.

  4. Be able to turn a road safety poem into a water safety poem

Process

Step 1 – Explore Water Safety

  • Watch pictures or a short video showing safe and unsafe water behaviors.

  • Discuss with a partner:

    • What was safe?

    • What was unsafe?

  • Write 3 things you learned about water safety on your paper.

Step 2 – Learn the Rules

  • Look at the list of good water safety practices:

    • Never swim alone

    • Always wear a life jacket

    • Listen to adults or lifeguards

    • Stay away from strong currents or deep water

  • Talk about why each one is important.

Step 3 – Poem Composing

  • Read a copy of the “Road Safety” poem.

  • Work with your group/pair to rewrite it into a water safety poem.

Step 4 – Share Your Poem

  • Practice reading your poem aloud.

  • Present it to the class with actions or gestures.

  • Listen to other groups and give them a thumbs-up for their efforts.
