Life in Hooverville

Hoovervilles were all over the United States during the Great Depression.  Your quest is to figure out the characteristics of a Hooverville and why they existed. Then you will create your own Hooverville.  Good luck and be very careful.  The law may be breathing down your neck while you're creating your Hooverville!

Task

Your task is to discover what a Hooverville looked like and why it existed.  You will explore some photos of Hoovervilles and pick out their important characteristics.  You'll explore the prices of some goods in the 1930s and compare them to prices today.  You will also discover what life was like for people in the United States during the Great Depression.

Your last project will be to create a drawing of your own Hooverville with all of the important characteristics. You may do this with help from the internet.  Good luck!  Watch for the police who often come in and tear down Hoovervilles!

Explore some photos of a Hooverville on-line.  Write out the important characteristics of a Hooverville.  Read chapter 8 of the book Bud, Not Buddy  to discover more details about Hoovervilles.
