Versions of Sleeping Beauty

This WebQuest is here to help you learn about the many different versions of Sleeping Beauty there are! Many of us are only familiar with the Disney version, but in different cultures around the world there are different ending, new characters, and even different names along with many more. 

Task

Using the book Folk and Fairy Tales you will be responsible for comparing and contrasting two to three versions of Sleeping Beauty. The book gives helpful information in the introduction along with the full stories from different authors. 

Working in pairs follow along with the task and please both students should write their answers on a separate sheet of paper to hand in. 

While working with the text and your partner keep in mind time time and year that version was written, who wrote it (ie. the gender of the author), and the culture in which the story was told within. 

The Sleeping Beauty section is located on pages 63-93.

Process

As a group before getting into pairs we will be discussing what version(s) of Sleeping Beauty we are all familiar with.

Questions in pairs:

  1. How many versions of Sleeping Beauty are there in this book?
  2. Going though each version, give a brief 3-5 sentence explanation of each.
  3. Are you familiar with any of the versions? Which one would you like to learn more about?
  4. Now that you are familiar with the version given, which stories seems the most creative to you?
  5. Has your view of Disney stories changed after reading and understanding these stories?

Be prepared to share your responses with the class.

Evaluation

Please answer the questions to your best ability. All questions should be answered in full sentences and give your. Your partner is there for help and insight NOT to give you all the answers. 

Conclusion

Now that you have worked through the stories and have seen the comparisons you should have a better understanding of the well known Disney version along any other versions in the book Folk and Fairy Tales.
