Vamos a España

Introduction

As you know, the language department in our school sponsors an extended field trip to Europe every other year. The next trip in 2026 will be going to Spain. Myself and Sra. Vargas will be making the final decisions as to what cities and places that we will visit since we know that we can´t possibly see it all. These decisions will be made in the next couple of weeks and we want your help. You will each be assigned to a group and you will also be assigned an area of Spain. You will research different sites, cultural events, and points of interest in your area cities and environs. You will create a google slide presentation and pitch your area. As a bonus incentive, each member of the winning group will receive $100 off the price of their trip!

Task

Each group will create a google slide presentation of attractions and activities for their area. There will be four groups in the class and the four areas of Spain will be Northern Spain, Central Spain, Coastal/Northeast Spain, and Andalucia in the south. Each member will choose a city within their area to focus on. As a group, you will choose additional tasks for each member such as a leader for the group, a scribe to keep a log of your progress, someone to write a summary of your area,  and someone to create travel tips. The group will discuss what details to include in the presentation and the leader will make all the final decisions should a conflict arise.

Process
  1. Each group will choose a leader and a scribe.

  2. The scribe will immediately create a log in Google docs or Google sheets for your group. In the log, you should include the following:

    • Which members met

    • The time and date of the meeting (starting today)

    • What was discussed in the meeting

    • What was accomplished or decided upon

    • What still needs to be done

Scribe is responsible for filling out the log each time the group meets including emails and text messages

  1. The leader will create a title slide with the name of the area, a map with the area identified within a map of Spain and the group member names. Leader will pick the slide theme and the font with input from the group.

  2. A third group member will create a regional slide with an overview of your area and what you will be presenting in the presentation. (This can be done at the end of the project so that it matches the content that has been selected.)

  3. A fourth group member will create a Travel Tips slide which can be at the beginning or the end of the presentation. It should include things like the weather for April in your region, what to pack, and any other information that you feel is necessary. The group can brainstorm about this during one of your meetings.

  4. Each student will research and create at least 6 individual slides. They should include:

    • The location of their city (provide a map of the city within the region)

    • What is the vibe of the city? (A paragraph about what it is known for or why we would want to visit it)

    • A minimum of 3 historic or educational attractions (churches, castles, museums etc.)

    • At least 1 fun activity the group can do in your city (the trip will be in the end of April)

    • At least 1 miscellaneous activity or site of your choice

    • A suggested food or famous restaurant

Go to Credits Tab to view Required and Suggested websites. Also suggested books.

  1. Each slide will have at least 1 picture that matches what is written there. Slides should be visibly pleasing, not too busy, and not too wordy. Slides should be in English so that they can be shared with others.

  2. The final slide should be a Works Cited Slide in MLA Format. Each member will add their own entries. The scribe should create the original slide for others to add to. (Make sure to share it with the group and make everyone an editor) You may use this link. www.scribbr.com

  3. The group will prepare a ten minute presentation of their slides. Each group will have

    • a 1 minute introduction

    • a 2 minute presentation by each member

    • a 1 minute wrap up

Make sure that you practice the presentation at least once as a group so that you can iron out any  kinks.

Conclusion

Regardless of which group of cities is chosen, students will learn about Spain by participating in this research and by listening to the presentations of others. They will gain valuable insight and knowledge of Spain's varied regions, their history, their culture, their cuisine, and their way of life. It is my hope that students will be more invested in the trip and more excited to go since they have had the opportunity to be a small part of the decision making process. Students will also learn a lot about what goes into planning a trip. I am sure that most of them will not have realized the amount of research and planning that goes into a trip of this magnitude.
