Introduction

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vd0fMpAIs1s

Watch the video to learn about the U.S. colonies and think about how someone travel to the United States to start a new life would feel.

Task

Today we will begin to answer the question "Why do diverse groups of people settle in new areas?" The first assignment as we try to answer this question will be this web-quest. In this web-quest you will explore U.S settlements and determine one you would like to live in and explain why. You should be able to compare and contrast your U.S. settlement to others and convince others to join you on this journey. At the end you should create a brochure which convinces others to join you on the journey to this U.S. Settlement.  In your brochure you must include:

-Why did you or should someone else chose to travel to this settlement?

-What resources are available to people at this settlement?

-What kind of jobs are available? What types of houses are available?

-What are the risks of choosing to settle here?

-How does this settlement compare to others? Better or worse.

Process

Step One

Before beginning on this task make sure you watch the Youtube video listed on the introduction. This will give you some basic information about the first U.S. settlements.

Step Two

The U.S. Settlements had a share of both good and bad things. Before you can choose a settlement for your brochure you should read through some of the sources below. These will give you some more information about the colonies, why people chose to travel to them, and what would be worth traveling for. Consider the questions listed after each reading in the sources.

Step Three

Now that you have some information about the colonies and early U.S. settlements, do some research. Use google to search for more information on the U.S. Settlements. When you are researching you should be able to answer the following questions:

1) Where were the U.S. early settlements located? Why?

2) What  kinds of things influenced peoples decision to move to U.S. settlements?

3) What are some difficulties people faced when moving and when living in these settlements?

Step Four

You are now ready to make your brochure. Your brochure should be one page front and back. It should include pictures as well as information. Remember you are trying to convince someone else to come to this U.S. Settlement. Below is an example brochure.
