Introduction

 Today we are going to take a look at the story of Joshua Norton, The Emperor of The United States. You are going to learn about his life, legacy and impact on the world around him.

Task

In groups of three you will talk about "The United States Emperor".

You will then watch an informative video on The U.S. Emperor, Joshua Norton.

After watching the video on Joshua Norton. you will make a small presentation on him.

You will have 60 minutes to complete your presentations.

You will first get into groups of three, where you will speculate and give your thoughts about "The United States Emperor". Be sure to take notes.

Your presentation should include;

  • The facts and stories you found most important about him
  • Your thoughts on some of his actions after he declared himself emperor
  • Your thoughts on the outlooks and actions of the public towards Joshua Norton
  • Anything you might want to add you find interesting.

You will have 60 minutes to complete your presentations.

The presentation should be on your own words, and should not be more than 5 - 6 minutes. You should also try not to fill the presentation with long paragraphs or read directly from it.

Text and Visuals The text wasn't excessive and the visuals complemented the presentation. Either too much text or some errors, some visuals were utilized. Too much text, spelling errors. No visuals were used.
Delivery Delivery was comprehensible and easy to understand. Delivery was comprehensible, but had some pauses or dragged on for too long. Delivery should be worked on.

 

Conclusion

Once the presentations have been prepared, you should be ready to present your's with your group. You should also take notes on other group's presentation and give constructive criticism after they present.

After everyone has presented, the class will vote on the best presentation.

This was created as a research activity. Teachers' job can be much easier if the students are interested in the topic. The point of it is tricking student to learning usefull such as how to make good presentation, while they think they are learning about some fun topic.

The objectives are that students:

  • will make use of effective note taking
  • will practice their researching skills (skimming and scanning)
  • will practice their presentation skills
