Unit 4: A house with a history

Introduction

IES N°4 Introductory Course

Unit 4 coursebook “Insight”. Pre-intermediate Student’s Book and Workbook by Wildam J. and Beddall F. 2014 – Oxford University Press.

Our city, San Salvador de Jujuy, may not be the biggest one in the world, but its historical richness is undeniable. Before reading the text "A house with a history" on pages 48 and 49 respectively, watch the following video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XROmeLyl8kw&t=3s.

Then, in groups, discuss what you know about the historical houses you saw on the collaborative map from the previous activity (the Macedonio Graz House and the ‘Juan Galo Lavalle’ Museum), by answering the following questions:

  • Did you know about these historical places?
  • Have you ever visited any of them?
  • Do you know of any other historical houses in Jujuy? Perhaps your own home has a rich history!
Task

The task will be divided into three parts:

  1. Rewatch the video included in the introduction. Take into account the way the information is presented.
  2. In groups of no more than four students, choose one historical house of Jujuy (you are free to work with the ones mentioned in the introduction or to choose any other you know about) and create a script for a promotional video. Get ready to role-play. Check for information online and be creative in the way you present it.

Context: You are tour guides aiming to invite people to visit a historical house in Jujuy. Your goal is to introduce the house in an informative and engaging way, in order to capture the tourists' attention. Remember to explain a bit of the place's history and why it is worth visiting, along with practical details, such as its location and visiting schedule.
  3. Record your presentation and make a short video (no less than 2 minutes). You can use different apps to edit it, such as Capcut, Tiktok, Inshot, etc. Add images, sounds, and music if possible.

Recommendations:

  • Distribute the roles within your group (for example: who records, who speaks and who edits the video).
  • You’re tour guides, so be persuasive; make the viewers eager to visit by convincing them of the house's historical importance.
Process

Process and resources

  • Watch your video again and reflect on the main difficulties you've had.

  • Reflect on the apps you need to keep working on.

  • Upload your video on one of these platforms: Youtube, Google Drive or Tiktok, but be sure to share the link in the Whatsapp group for everyone to access.

Products

  • Each group will show their video to the rest of the class.
  • The other groups must pay attention so that they can provide feedback, clear out doubts or ask questions.

Report / analysis and practice phase:

  1. Listen to each other.

  2. Write down comments and be respectful towards your classmates' work.

  3. Identify language that needs to be improved.

  4. Share comments, reflect, give feedback to each other.

Conclusion

Throughout this class, you've not only worked in groups but also practiced the language you're aiming to teach one day, all while making use of technological tools and devices. As you can see, being an English teacher isn't just about teaching grammar in a strict, traditional way; it's about creating a positive learning environment that motivates students. Welcome to the introductory course, future educators!
