Understanding Differences in Learning Theories: Cognitive Psychology, Behaviorism, and Social Cognitive Theory

Introduction

Have you ever wondered why you classmates learn differently than you? Do they learn better by reading the notes, doing hands-on activities, or teaching the topic? Today we will be discovering why everyone learns differently by doing a project over Cognitive Psychology, Behaviorism, and Social Cognitive Theory.

The purpose of this project is to help you learn and identify the key differences between Cognitive Psychology, Behaviorism, and Social Cognitive Theory. You will be able to identify they psychologist who developed the theories and the important role they have on how we process information.

Task

Review:

First review these videos over the three different theories.

Cognitive Psychology

Behaviorism

Social Cognitive Theory

Task:

You will be divided into groups of three or four and assigned two of the three learning theories. Your objective is to highlight the key differences and similarities of the two theories by creating a comparison chart, graphic organizer, or PowerPoint.

You will also use real-world examples on how the theories can be used in the classroom to benefit students.

You will then present your findings to the class.

Process

1. Research both the theories you were assigned using reliable sources online. (Make sure to cite your sources.)

Examples of useful sources:

Cognitive Psychology:

Behaviorism:

Social Cognitive Theory:

2. Organize your information and findings:

Must include:

  • Definition
  • Key Theorists
  • Key Principles
  • Strengths
  • Weaknesses
  • Images that aid in understanding
  • Differences
  • Application in the classroom
  • Sources used cited on the slides

3. Create presentation

Create a comparison chart, graphic organizer, or Powerpoint over the information you found about the theories and their differences.

You must have all information above and at least two examples of the theory being used in the classroom.

4. Presentation

Each group will come to the front of the classroom and both students will be required to speak. You will teach the class your theories and how they are similar and different.

Have fun with this assignment and be creative. Make sure is is visually appealing and easy to read and follow!

Conclusion

You should have just researched two assigned theories in depth and discovered how they can be used in the classroom to aid in students' understanding. Think now think beyond the theories based on these questions:

  • Which theory do you think explains how people learn BEST and why?
  • Was there a theory that you do not believe is applicable in the classroom or are they all? Explain your reasoning.
  • Do you believe you can combine more than one there to be even more successful? How?
  • Which theory do you think best aligns to how you learn? Explain.
  • What was the most interesting thing you discovered why researching the theories?
  • Do you feel like these theories apply to adults too? How might an adult learn something using one of the theories?
