Conformity is when individuals adjust their behaviors, attitudes, and beliefs to align with the norms, values, or standards of their society or social group. People conform to be accepted, avoid conflict, or feel part of the community. This can be influenced by factors like peer pressure, cultural expectations, and the desire for social approval. Conformity is generally seen as a way to maintain social harmony and order.
What do you think helps a group or community stay organized and peaceful?
Why do you think people usually follow rules or behave in ways that are accepted by others?
What might happen in a group or society if there were no rules or expectations for behavior?
Social control is the set of mechanisms, strategies, and practices that societies use to regulate individuals' behavior, ensuring that they conform to established norms, values, and laws. It plays a crucial role in maintaining social order by guiding people to act in ways that align with societal expectations.
Social control works to reinforce behaviors that fit within society’s standards and to discourage deviance (actions that go against those standards).
- Formal Social Control: This involves organized systems and institutions like laws, policies, school rules, and punishments.
- Informal Social Control: This is exercised through social interactions and includes peer pressure, family influence, cultural expectations, and social norms.
- Gossip is the informal sharing of information about others' behavior, usually within a group. When people hear about someone’s misbehavior or actions that go against group norms, it can make them more cautious and encourage them to conform.
- Social ostracism involves excluding or isolating someone who behaves in a way that goes against group expectations. This can be a form of punishment or pressure to encourage conformity.
Another critical aspect of social control in the Philippines is the use of Laws and Punishments to regulate behavior and uphold social order. Through formal systems, such as the legal and judicial institutions, laws are created to define acceptable conduct and set consequences for violations. For example, laws against theft, assault, and illegal drug use not only aim to protect the rights and safety of individuals but also reinforce the values that the society holds dear.
Punishments, which range from fines and community service to imprisonment, serve as deterrents to prevent people from engaging in harmful or criminal activities. In the Philippine setting, laws such as the Anti-Bullying Act in schools or the Cybercrime Prevention Act are designed to protect citizens from various forms of harm and ensure accountability. Additionally, the Barangay Justice System plays a role in resolving local disputes and minor offenses, fostering harmony and preventing the escalation of conflicts within communities.
By enforcing these laws and implementing corresponding punishments, the Philippine government works to maintain social control, guiding people to act in ways that support societal peace and security.
Task
You will:
- Research the different forms of social control (gossip, social ostracism, laws, and punishments).
- Examine the role of these mechanisms in influencing conformity and combating deviance, with a special focus on cyberbullying.
- Create a visual representation (e.g., infographic or diagram) that illustrates how these mechanisms operate in society.
- Reflect on your findings in a short essay answering key questions provided.
Process
Step 1: Explore Conformity
- Watch the video “What is Conformity?” (link will be provided by your teacher).
- Think about your own experiences with conformity. Reflect on this question:
"Have you ever followed a trend or rule without questioning it? Why?" - Write a brief response and share it via a Google Form.
Step 2: Learn About Social Control
- Read the provided materials or explore additional resources about:
- Informal Social Control (Gossip and Social Ostracism)
- Formal Social Control (Laws and Punishments)
- Consider the following:
- How does each form of social control address cyberbullying?
- Can these forms of control unintentionally contribute to the problem?
Step 3: Apply Your Knowledge
- Activity: Create a graphic organizer.
- Use cyberbullying as the central theme.
- Show how gossip and ostracism influence behavior online.
- Explain how laws, like the Anti-Bullying Act and Cybercrime Prevention Act, protect individuals.
- Use arrows, symbols, or creative visuals to demonstrate connections between concepts.
Step 4: Reflect and Conclude
- Answer the reflective question:
- Which form of social control is most effective in reducing cyberbullying? Why?
- Write a short essay summarizing your insights.

Conclusion

Conformity and social control play integral roles in maintaining harmony and order within society. Through mechanisms such as gossip, social ostracism, laws, and punishments, individuals are guided to align their behavior with societal norms and values. While conformity fosters unity and minimizes conflict, it also raises questions about individual freedom and the consequences of deviance. Understanding the balance between these forces is crucial, as excessive control can stifle creativity and individuality, while inadequate control can lead to chaos and disorder. By examining how these mechanisms influence behavior, particularly in addressing contemporary issues like cyberbullying, students can develop critical insights into the importance of social structures in creating safe and respectful communities. Ultimately, exploring conformity and social control encourages us to reflect on our responsibilities as members of society and our power to shape the cultural and moral fabric of our world.
