As we go through this WebQuest, you’ll explore the story, learn new words, and connect the lessons of The Ugly Duckling to your own experiences.

Task

Your mission in this WebQuest is to:

  1. Read The Ugly Duckling story and play the audio file at the same time.

  2. Discover and understand new vocabulary.

  3. Test your comprehension of the story.

  4. Discuss and reflect on the story’s deeper message.

By the end of the lesson, you’ll have a better understanding of the story, new vocabulary and insights into how the duckling’s journey can relate to your own life!

Process

Step 1: Follow the link and answer the following question in 2-3 sentences: The Ugly Duckling - Step 1 

  • "Have you ever felt out of place or different? What do you think the duckling might discover by the end of the story?" ✍🏻

 

 

 

Step 2: Read the Story 📖🔊

  1. Read the story "The Ugly Duckling": The Ugly Duckling - Storynory

  2. Play the audio file while reading. Pay attention to the duckling’s journey, the other animals’ reactions, and the transformation at the end.

  3. Write down any words or phrases that you don’t understand. Don’t worry if you don’t know all the words! 

 

 

 

Step 3: Vocabulary 📝

  1. Search the new words from the story: Use WordReference (Αγγλοελληνικό Λεξικό WordReference.com) to look up the words or phrases you wrote down.

  2. Write the following for each new word:

  • The word (e.g., "misunderstood")

  • The definition (παρεξηγημένος)

  • A sentence using the word, related to The Ugly Duckling or similar situations.

Step 5: Create a New Ending 💭

  • Υour task is to create a new ending for The Ugly Duckling. Think creatively and decide how the story could end differently! Use your imagination and consider different outcomes based on what we know about the characters.

Step 6: Create a "Before and After" Drawing with a Short Story Description 🎨🖌️

Draw two scenes:

  • The first scene should show the Ugly Duckling before his transformation (when he was still an "ugly duckling").
  • The second scene should show the Ugly Duckling after his transformation (as a beautiful swan).

Under each drawing, write a short description of the scene. Describe the appearance of the Ugly Duckling (or swan), how the character feels, and what has changed in the story! 🦢
