The Incredible World of Fungi: Your first assignment as a Junior Assistant

Introduction

First let us fast forward to eight years in the future. You have just graduated from the University of South Carolina Upstate receiving your Bachelor’s degree in Biology. You have just started your new job as a junior assistant working with Professor Williams who has her Master's degree in Biology. She is currently researching fungi, and all of its recognized 7 phyla + 1 group studied by specialists called mycologists.

Task

Your assignment is to complete the following tasks:

  1. Find out the overall general biology of organisms considered to be fungi.
  2. Name the Domain, Kingdom, and Phylum/Group for each of the 7+1.
  3. The classification name of the organisms that are part of each individual phylum—for example members of the Phylum Ascomycota are called ascomycetes.
  4. List what diseases, if any, that the fungi cause. Make sure to include the species name of the organism if it is given.
  5. General characteristics for each specific phylum/group.

You are expected to do these steps for each phylum or group. Create an overall fungi scrapbook or portfolio making a specific section for each phylum or group.

Process

You will be working on team with 3 other associates. Before starting the portfolio or scrapbook, the team must complicity come to an agreement on what phyla/group each associate is completing and is required to notify Professor Williams as to what group or phyla they are each responsible for. Each associate will complete and gather the required information for 2 phyla or group. Besides submitting the overall portfolio or scrapbook as a whole, each associate is also required to submit to me an individual document containing all of the work the individual has compiled and contributed to the overall project.

The easiest and fastest way to get this task done is to assign what phyla/group each team member is responsible for. Each team member must complete each aspect of tasks 2-5 listed above, while the information for task 1 can be completed and compiled by the group as a whole.

Professor Williams has compiled a PDF or web document containing all of the information you will need to complete this task. There is also a video of an overview of fungi that will be made available to you to complete the portfolio (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dj9m7Oc36wM Ascomycota, Basidiomycota, Chytridiomycota, Glomeromycota, and Zygomycota). You will have to check the document I have upload for information on the unmentioned remaining 2 phyla (Blastocladiomycota and Neocallimastigomycota).

For pictures of laboratory slides containing common representatives of each phylum or group check the lab pamphlet or Biology textbook in Professor Williams’ office, which you can make photocopies of any images. You can also check this educational website for information:

Conclusion

The summary of this activity is to compile information on the recognized 7 phyla + 1 group of fungi. After accurate and highly detailed information has been obtained by each group member for all of their assigned phyla/group, a scrapbook or portfolio must be compiled which should include all of the required information listed in tasks 1-5 given by the professor. The scrapbook should include what is listed under the task section above.
