Types of Theater Stages

Introduction

Introduction: Students will identify the different types of theater stages and what kind of performances works best with each stage.

Grade Levels: 9-12

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will identify the different stages in a theater.
  • Students will compare and contrast indoor theaters and outdoor theaters.
  • Students will apply knowledge of performance elements from every stage.

 

Task

The assignment is to identify and match each stage to its layout via the given word matching activity. Following the completion of the assignment, students in their table groups will discuss and write shows they think will work best on each stage.

After the allotted time (20 minutes), each group will have a chance to share with the class their choices and briefly explain why.

Process
  1. Students will go to the link(s) provided and read and look at the information provided below.
  2. The student will complete handout (provided by teacher).
  3. The student will work in a group with their peers and discuss what they've learned.
  4. The group will choose and write musicals/plays that would match each theater space.
  5. After discussions, each group will share with the class what they've written.

Evaluation

Rubric (out of 100 points):

  • Word Match (50 points): Correctly Identified and Matched Terms.
  • Group Assignment (25 points): Correctly Picked Shows with each stage.
  • Participation (25 points): Participated with group and class discussion.

 

Conclusion

At the end of this assignment, students will have learned the different stages in theater and how to apply that knowledge when putting on a performance.
