Introduction
Fencing is the practice of enclosing an area of land with physical barriers such as wire, woods, stone or other materials to control the movement of animals and protect crops or Propeties.
Fencing is one of the most important structures on a farm. It helps control the movement of animals, protects crops, and marks farm boundaries. Without proper fencing, farms can face challenges such as livestock losses, crop damage, and conflicts with neighbors.in this WebQuest, you will explore different types of fencing used in agriculture, their purposes, materials, advantages, and limitations. You will then use what you learn to recommend the most suitable fencing type for a given farming situation.
Task
You are required to:
1. Investigate the different types of fencing used in agriculture.
2. Compare their advantages, disadvantages, and suitability for different purposes.
3. Design a fencing plan for a small mixed farm that keeps cattle, goats, and grows maize.
4. Present your findings and fencing plan to the class in a poster, report, or PowerPoint presentation.
Process
Step 1: Form Groups
Work in groups of 3–5 students. Each group member should take a role:
Researcher – collects information from textbooks and notes
Recorder – writes down important points
Designer – draws the fence plan
Presenter – explains the group’s final work to the class
Step 2: Do Research
Use your Agriculture textbook, class notes, and any printed materials provided by the teacher to find out about types of fencing.
For each type, find the following:
.Materials used
.Advantages and disadvantages
.Cost and maintenance needs
.Suitability for different types of farms or animals
Step 3: Make a Comparison Table
Work together to record your findings in a table like this:
Include:
Type of Fence, Materials Cost, Advantages & Disadvantages and Best Use.
Step 4: Design Your Farm Fence
Imagine you own a 2-hectare mixed farm with:
.10 cattle
.15 goats
.1 hectare of maize
Design a fencing plan for your farm that suits these conditions.
Include:
.The type(s) of fence you choose
.A sketch or diagram showing where eac
h fence will go
.A short explanation of why you chose those types of fences
Evaluation
Your work will be assessed based on five main criteria: research content, comparison table, fencing plan, presentation, and teamwork.
1. Research Content:
Learners who provide complete and accurate information about the different types of fencing, including materials, advantages, disadvantages, and suitability, will achieve the highest marks. Partial or incomplete research will receive lower marks.
2. Comparison Table:
A clear and well-organized table showing the differences between types of fences will earn an excellent rating. Tables that are mostly complete or missing some information will be graded as good or fair, while those that are disorganized or lack detail will be rated poor.
3. Fencing Plan:
A realistic, creative, and well-explained fencing plan that clearly suits the mixed farm situation will earn top marks. Plans that are clear but not fully justified will be rated good. Those that are partly suitable or unrealistic will receive fair or poor ratings.
4. Presentation:
Learners who present their work in an engaging, neat, and well-organized manner will be rated excellent. Clear and understandable presentations will be rated good, while basic or poorly organized ones will score lower.
5. Teamwork:
Groups that show active participation and cooperation from all members will earn the highest marks. If only some members contribute or the teamwork is uneven, the score will be lower. Poor collaboration or lack of participation will result in a low rating.
Conclusion
Through this WebQuest, you will:
.Understand the different types of fencing used in agriculture.
.Learn how to select the best fence based on purpose, cost, and materials.
.Develop skills in teamwork, critical thinking, and problem-solving.
