Adverbs are words that can modify or describe verbs, adjectives, another adverbs or entire sentence providing information about the manner, time, place, frequency, degree, or certainty of the action or state. Adverbs are usually formed by adding –ly to the end of an adjective (e.g. quick becomes quickly), although there are also other adverbs that don’t have this ending.

Examples:

•    Luckily, the fire department responded immediately.

•    Monica can’t attend the party, unfortunately.

Adverbs Vs. Adjectives

Adverbs are sometimes confused with adjectives but to differentiate the two we should remember that while adverbs can modify verbs, adjectives and other adverbs, adjectives can only modify nouns and pronouns.

Some adverbs use the same form as their corresponding adjectives. These are known as “flat adverbs”

Example:

•    Straight

•    Fast

•    Early

TIP

If you are unsure whether a word is being used as an adverb or an adjective, look at the word that its modifying. If it’s modifying a noun or a pronoun, it’s an adjective. If it’s modifying anything else, it’s an adverb.

For example:

Don’t drive fast- Adverb

A fast car- Adjective

There are Five Types of Adverb

1. Adverbs of Manner

2. Adverbs of Degree

3. Adverbs of Place

4. Adverbs of Time

5. Adverbs of Frequency

Adverbs of Manner

It describes how an action is performed or how something happens. In most cases, adverbs of manner occur after the main verb. Examples:

•    The train moved slowly.

•    The dog barks loudly.

•    The labourers work hard.

Adverbs of Degree

They are used to qualify verbs, adjectives or adverbs by expressing extent or degree. Some common adverbs of degree include: Extremely, absolutely, slightly, quiet and enough.

Examples:

•    The medication had a very positive effect.

•    It’s quiet heavy.

•    You are absolutely right.

Adverbs of Place

It provides information about the location of an action (e.g. position, distance and direction). Adverbs of place typically occur after the main verb of a sentence.

Examples:

•    Go downstairs and open the door.

•    Confetti was thrown everywhere.

•    Come here! Adverbs of Time

 Adverbs of Time and Duration

Describe when something happens (e.g. yesterday, today, tomorrow). They are typically placed at the end of the sentence.

Example: I have to go, but I’ll see you tomorrow

Adverbs of Duration

They describe the length of time something happens for. (e.g. temporarily, forever, shortly)

Example:

I played football briefly.

Adverbs of Frequency

It describe how often something happens.

Examples:

•    I check my email hourly.

•    Anna always works on Saturdays.

•    Jessica never washes the dishes.

It's important to note that not all adverbs end in "-ly," and not all words that end in "-ly" are adverbs. However, in general, if you see a word that ends in "-ly," there's a good chance that it's an adverb
