Spain Webquest

Introduction

You have always wanted to go to Europe and your family has decided to take a trip to Spain at the end of this summer.

While you are there you will be visiting three major cities: Madrid, Barcelona and Seville.  You are extremely excited, however, you’ve realized that there’s a small problem.  Neither you nor your family knows any Spanish nor do they know anything about the country.

Since you are out of school for the summer they have left it up to you to figure things out.  To make your trip to Spain an enjoyable one you need to find out some essential phrases that will help you to get by. You will also need some basic information about the country and its culture so that you know what to expect when you get there as well as what to do.

Since this is such a big task you have asked 3 of your friends to help you in finding out what you and your family needs to know before going on your big trip.

Task

In looking for the information to assist you and your family in their travels you will need to organize what you have found.

Your task is to take the information you have found and create a small book that can be carried with you on your trip.  The book you create will contain the following information all in Spanish: (Please note that the following areas will be explained in greater detail in the process section).

-    Important phrases and words
-    Transportation
-    Foods
-    Climate/Clothing
-    Tourist Attractions
-    Celebrations
-    Hotels

Your book should also contain relevant photos to accompany the different sections.  (i.e. A photo of the famous cathedral in Sevilla in the section on Tourist Attractions).

At the beginning and end of this task you will also be required to write a short journal entry based on questions that will be presented to you with respect to the task at hand.  However, this is not part of your book, it is a separate part of the assignment and will be done individually.

Process

Before beginning your research each of you will be writing a short essay.  Using this link, write your essay based on the questions presented on that page. Write it on your own paper or type it in a new document. DO NOT edit the document shared with you.

Where to begin:

1.  The class will be divided into groups of 4 and each person will have a specific responsibility within the group.

2. Students one and two will be designated to find essential phrases while students three and four will be designated to find general information about Spain.

3.  While looking for information, be sure to collect some pictures along the way that you can incorporate into the final product.

4. As you go along and do your research you may want to type up what you have found to make it easier when it comes time to design your book.  (That way you don't have to hand write everything - appearance counts!)

5. Your group will divide up responsibilities in the following way:

Student One: You will be responsible for finding out some essential phrases that you and your family will need to know in order to do certain things while you are in Spain.  You will focus on the following areas:

    -    Common foods/drinks (2 foods per city)
    -    Phrases for ordering in a restaurant (5 phrases)
    -    Numbers
    -    Miscellaneous phrases that you feel would be useful  (10 phrases)                  (Consult with student two about which phrases you wish to include)

Student Two:  You will be responsible for finding out some essential phrases that you and your friend's family will need to know in order to do certain things while you are in Spain. You will focus on the following areas:

    -    Modes of transportation
    -    Phrases you would use in an airport, bus station, train station or metro
    -    Finding and/or checking in a hotel

(Consult with student one about which phrases you wish to include)

    -    Foods

1. Essential Phrases (Be sure to categorize them according to topic) - Fraces Importantes
2. Climate - El Tiempo
3. Hotels - Los Hoteles
4. Foods (2-3 foods per city) - La Comida
5. Tourist Attractions -  Atracción Turística
6. Customs/Celebrations - Celebraciones

Include any pictures or photographs you found while searching for information.  You must include at least 10 pictures. See your teacher for materials to put your book together (Paper, glue, markers, scissors, etc.).

Presentation:

So you're all done!  You've completed your book and your family is very grateful for your hard work.  Now they can go on their trip and enjoy themselves without having to spend their time learning some Spanish and figuring things out on their own about Spain.  But now you must present your book to your family and show them what you have found.

You and your group members will spend about 5-10 minutes to briefly explain to the class what you have found.  While you are listening to other presentations you will be comparing in your mind the information you found and the information other groups found.  Were they similar?  Were they completely different?  After the presentations we will spend a few minutes discussing what the groups have found.
