Introduction

Hello Kids! I want you guys to think about this question:

Do you know where all the ingredients for your favorite snack come from?

If you said, "The snack factory," get ready to be amazed!

Follow this webquest to find out just how many people and places contributed to your favorite snack.

Task

Your task is follow the steps in this webquest to discover the origins of your snack.

After you have discovered the origins of your snack, you will show the locations of the ingredients on a Google Earth map.

Vocabulary that might help you on your journey (You can refer back to this list anytime).

Contributed - act of giving in common with others for a common purpose.

Origin - the point or place where something begins.

Location - a particular place or position.

Positive - in a good way

Negative - in a bad way

Impact - have a strong effect on someone or something

Harmed - hurt

Once you are familiar with this vocabulary, you are ready to click the "Process" button at the top.

Process

Follow these steps to located the origin of your snack.

DAY 1

Step #1: Read the nutrition label (See example in the health center) on your snack bag.

Step #2: Choose 2 or 3 ingredients that you would like to research.

Step #3: Report your ingredients to your teacher.

Days 2-3

Step #4: Get a laptop and click on the digital folder with your name on it.

Step #5: Click the links in your digital folder to research about your ingredients. Fill in the following information in your social studies journal for all your ingredients that you chose to research.

  • Name of the ingredient.
  • The country it comes from.
  • Does it positively or negatively impact the environment and why?
  • Does it positively or negatively impact people and why?

Once all this information is written in your social studies journal, you are ready to click on the "Evaluation" button on the top.

Evaluation

Days 4-5

Step #1: Click on the Google Chrome button on your computer.

Step #2: Click on the Bookmark button and click on: Google Earth Maps

Step #3: Follow the instructions to add your ingredient locations.

Step #4: Please remember to type up a 2-3 sentence explanation for each point on your map.

Step #5: Have a buddy check your map and read it. Correct any mistakes if necessary.

Step #6: Share the link to your map with your teacher.

The End! You did it! I can't wait to see your finished product! You may now click the "Conclusion" button.

Conclusion

Open your social studies journal and answer these questions using complete sentences:

  1. How many countries and people did it take to make the snack you chose to research?
  2. Is the environment being helped or harmed in any way? Talk about in what ways.
  3. Are people being helped or harmed in any way? Talk about in what ways.
  4. What do you think you or people you know could do to change what we are doing if the environment or people are being harmed? In what ways do you want to help. Talk about at least one way. You can draw a picture if you want to show how you will help. You can even color it, too!

Be prepared to discuss your answers with the class.
