TOPIC: GOVERNANCE IN KIRIBATI

Introduction

COLONIALISM IN KIRIBATI AND THE PACIFIC

  • The first people to settle in the Gilbert Islands and Banaba came from Southeast Asia, traveling through Micronesia about 4,000 to 5,000 years ago. Later, European governments took control of the Pacific to protect their citizens and property. After World War II, the United Nations pushed for decolonization, which led to Pacific islands like Kiribati gaining independence. Kiribati is a country made up of 33 islands, but it only has 700 square kilometers of land, surrounded by 3 million square kilometers of ocean.

COLONIAL POWER:

  • A big and powerful country involved in the process of colonization. Colonial powers were mainly European countries who came into the Pacific and colonized the smaller and much weaker countries like Kiribati.
  • For example, Great Britain, France, Germany, Spain, and etc.

COLONY

  • A colony is a small, less powerful country that is controlled by a big powerful country. Kiribati was an example of such an island called a colony because it is small and cannot resist invasion from a big powerful country or colonial power like Great Britain.
  • For example, Kiribati, Fiji, Tuvalu, Vanuatu, and so forth.
