Tomorrows Teachers Webquest - K.RF.3

Introduction

This specific Web Quest will focus on kindergarten standard, K.RF.3. Which asks for students to be able to identify and name uppercase and lowercase letters of the alphabet. As everything in this grade builds off of itself, being able to identify and name the alphabet will help the students when they start reading. I have created this Web Quest to hopefully help the students learn but in a engaging way.

Task

The end goal is for students to be able to name the alphabet and weather they are uppercase or lowercase letters. The task will be for students to work in small groups to help each other learn. Part of the task is naming the letters, this will be through notecards that the students make and learning tools like magnetic letters, foam letters or building blocks with letters. Part two of this task is to be able to differentiate uppercase and lowercase letters. This too will be done the same way as naming letters, along with their flashcards.

Process

Part 1: Name the letters of the alphabet.

- Students will make notecards with a lowercase and uppercase letter on either side of the notecard, this will also be critical to part two of this task. Depending on what the teachers prefer, student can attempt to write the letters or practice fine motor skills and cut out letters to be glued on either side of the notecard.

- When in small groups students will pair up and show each other the flashcard to then attempt to identify the letter.

- When at other stations that do not include their notecards, students will use the foam and/or magnetic letters to then match them to the letter on a printed out piece of paper.

Part 2: Identify weather the letters are uppercase or lowercase.

- To continuing using the resources at hand, students will use the notecards they have previously created in part 1. Then students will pair up with another student to then attempt to identify weather the letter is uppercase or lowercase.

- Students can also continuing working in small groups with identification of letters, or the teacher can us popcorn answering or whiteboard, while showing the students uppercase or lowercase letters. To ensure everyone can participate, students can draw a up or down arrow instead of spelling uppercase or lowercase on the white board.

*This notecards can also be taken home for students to use for further practice outside of the classroom.

*This method is to allow students to memorize components of the alphabet.

Evaluation

I will be using the rubric below to evaluate the students on their ability to name the letters of the alphabet and identify uppercase and lowercase letters. Students will meet in a one on one setting with the teacher to use their notecards while I assess them on their ability to name and identify. Students are required to meet at least a 4 on their evaluation to be able to be moved on to the next unit.

Conclusion

Thank you for using this Web Quest as  a reference to K.RF.3. My hope is that using this Web Quest will allow for students to be able to name letters of the alphabet and identify weather they are uppercase or lowercase.

Credits

I would like to acknowledge IUK for suggesting this website as a suitable source to creating a Web Quest. This website allowed for a user friendly experiencing when creating a Web Quest. As well as IDOE for the easy access of kindergarten standards.

Teacher Page

My goal of this Web Quest was to allow for students to teach themselves components of the alphabet compared to listening to a teacher lecture. This will help the students become self-reliant while also allowing the teacher to be able to visit different small groups during stations.

Standard:

K.RF.3 - Identify and name all uppercase (capitol) and lowercase letters of the alphabet.
