The titanic

Introduction

Welcome to our Webquest. We will look into the past and learn about the terrible tragedy that struck our nation’s history; the Titanic. By the end of this Webquest you will be able to answer many questions about the Titanic.

Task

Tasks:

You will have seven tasks to complete.

Task 1: You will read and listen about the Titanic and learn about the history of this “ill-fated ship.”

Task 2: You will create a timeline of events that led up to the sinking of the Titanic.

Task 3: You will pretend you are the captain of the Titanic. After visiting the website provided, you will envision what you would've done and how you would have reacted.  You will then write an essay about how you would have done things.

Task 4: You will draw your own version of the Titanic and how you would've built it to withstand the impact of the iceberg. You will also complete some mathematical questions.

Task 5: You will read about some passengers of the Titanic; first, second and third class passengers.

Task 6: Watch the two short clips provided from the movie, "The Titanic" and the History Channel documentary. Then create a Venn diagram of the differences and similarities between the movie and what really happened.

Task 7: Learn the science behind the ship and its sinking and complete some science activities.

Process

Process:

Task 1: You will read and listen about the Titanic and learn about the history of this “ill-fated ship.”  (Individual)

After reading all the links and watching the video, type a summary on what you read.  It must be at least ONE page typed Word Document; double spaced. IT MUST MAKE SENSE! It must be organized and be clearly written. Answer the 5 W’s and H! (Make your font 12 and In Times New Roman.)

Task 2: Complete a timeline of events.  Get from your teacher a large piece of white paper.  You can use your netbook to help you. BE CREATIVE! (Group)

Task 3: You will pretend you are the captain of the Titanic. After visiting the website provided, you will envision what you would've done and how you would have reacted.  You will then write an essay about how you would have done things or if anything could have been done differently. This must be written in first person. Make someone reading feel as if you were really there. It must be at least two well written paragraphs.  (Individual and written in cursive)

Task 4: You will draw your own version of the Titanic and how you would've built it to withstand the impact of the iceberg. (Ask Mrs. Garrett for help) (Group)

Titanic Construction: Get from Mrs. Garrett

Now, complete the questions "Titanic Facts and Figures" individually. (Get from Mrs. Garrett)

Task 5: You will read about some passengers of the Titanic; first, second and third class passengers. Pick a passenger to learn about. You will then complete a character web that tells about them. (Group) Get web from Mrs. Reeder.

  1. Read "Lessons Learned" and take a quiz that you get from Mrs. Traywick. (You can do this as a group)

 SCIENCE ACTIVITIES

Task 7: On a sheet of your lined paper answer the questions and do the “experiments” .  (GROUP)

  1. Define buoyancy.
  2. How do sailing vessels float?
  3. Why does ice floats?
  4. Why didTitanic sink?
    1. Make a boat out of aluminum foil.
    2. Put the foil boat into a plastic tub of water.
    3. Fill the boat with pennies one at a time and keep adding them until the boat sinks.
    4. Count the number of pennies it took to sink the boat.
    5. Why did the aluminum boat sink after you added these pennies?

              WATER TEMPERATURE

The temperature of the water was -2.2 degrees Celsius when Titanic was sinking.

  1. What would the temperature be in Fahrenheit degrees? (Fahrenheit equals 9/5 Celsius temperature plus 32 degrees.)
  2. How long do you think you could keep your hands in it?

                   TITANIC SINKS

Under high pressure, water pushes through an opening faster.

  1.  Four holes have been cut in a quart-size milk carton. Put tape over all the holes and fill the container with water. Place the container in the bucket provided and remove the top piece of tape. Have them mark the furthest distance the water stream reaches. Continue this with the second, third and fourth holes.
  2.  Write a conclusion about why the water from the lowest (or deepest) hole went the greatest distance.
