Throwing a Ball in Physical Education

Introduction

The third grade students will use soft-weight balls to learn how to throw to each other in partner practice with throw and catch. The students will be able to use proper vocabulary when explaining how to throw a ball correctly. The student will be able to throw a soft-weight ball with 75 percent accuracy.

Task

The teacher will start by modeling the correct way to throw a ball. The teacher will use terms such as grip, stance, motion, follow-through, and target focus. The student will then practice by throwing the ball at a wall for 5 minutes with a big target. After practicing with the wall, the student will play an activity of throw and catch with a partner and receive feedback from the teacher. The student should be able to answer oral questions about technique and be able to throw a ball with correct technique.

Some questions that will be asked will be reinforcing questions such as: "How do we grip the ball?"

"What is the proper stance?"

"What does the motion look like when we throw the ball?"

"What does follow-through mean?"

"Why is target-focus important?"

Students should be able to answer all of these questions by the end of the lesson.

Process

1. Students will first discuss in a group what they know about throwing ball, so they can connect what they already to know to what they are about to learn. Then, the whole group will come together to discuss the knowledge we know. The teacher will write this on the whiteboard in KWL chart of what we know in the K column. Then, we will talk about what we want to know as well. The teacher will write this on the W column.

The students will organize this information in their physical education journal.

2. The teacher will go over the terms discussed in the task and how these terms are important when throwing a ball with the correct technique.

3. The teacher will model each term with a soft-weight ball. Then, the teacher and student will do this together going over each step for each term.

4. The teacher will show a video on throwing a ball. This gives the students another visual and example when throwing a ball overhanded correctly. Here is the link:

5. As the video is playing, the teacher will discuss each of the terms as the little girl is throwing pausing throughout the video.

6. After watching the video, three targets will be on the wall. The students will be divided into groups to practice their grip, stance, motion, follow-through, and target-focus. The teacher will observe as the students practice providing appropriate feedback for each child as they practice.

7.After practicing with the wall, the students will then play a game of throw and catch with a partner. The partner's hands then will be the child's target focus. Each student should be able to throw with 75 percent accuracy.

8. At the end, students should be able to tell the teacher and/or peers what they have learned from throwing a ball. They will write in their L column in their journal about they have learned from throwing a ball.

Evaluation

The teacher will evaluate each child by watching their technique and providing feedback throughout the target wall practice and the throw and catch game.

The teacher will use correct terminology when discussing and giving feedback to the students.

The students will be given an oral test of the terminology used today when going around the gym to discuss their correct technique during observations.

Conclusion

In reflection, the students will be provided a whiteboard marker to write a word or phrase they have learned today when throwing a ball in the KWL chart. The teacher will reflect on these and go into discussion if needed for what we have learned about throwing a ball.

Some things could include are the terminology used, how to work with their partner better in throw and catch, or the certain steps to throw better learned from the video.
