Introduction

Facts About States of Matter - Easy Science For Kids

Today students, we are going to review the states of matter you have learned in third grade. Learning the states of matter can be fun, especially today!

We will be learning on top of the information you have already learned in third grade.

In a solid, the molecules are packed in tight together meaning they are more dense; solids have a definite shape, mass, and volume.

In a liquid, the molecules flow more than a solid but do not have as much space as a gas; liquids take the shape of its container but have a definite volume.

In a gas, there is a large amount of empty space; a gas is the least dense of the three matters and has no fixed shape of volume.

- In the image below, you can see the molecules of each state of matter

Task

Today, you will discover how H2O can be found in all three states of matter: liquid, solid, and gas

H2O in a liquid form is water as many of you know.

H2O in a solid for is ICE.

Lastly, H2O in a gas form is water vapor.

You will need parent supervision in part of this activity because you will need to use a stove or hot pot.

This video "Science Trek" by PBS Kids explains three forms of matter: solids, liquids, and gases. In the vide… | States of matter, Forms of matter, Solid liquid gas

Process

*Adult supervision is required steps five-eight*

  • Step one: gather your materials

Materials:

1. 3 ice cubes (more if you want)

2. clear drinking glass

3. pot

  • Step two: remove 3 pieces of ice from your freezer and place them in your clear glass

  • Step three: observe your ice cubes while they are melting, describe your observations every 10-20 minutes

  • Step four: when the ice is completely melted record what form it is now

  • Step five: pour your melted ice into your pan (adult supervision begins now)

  • Step six: have your parent turn the stove or hot pot on high

  • Step seven: record your observations, what is happening to the melted ice

  • Step eight: when there is no ice left (have adult turn off stove or hot pot), reflect on your activity

Evaluation

For your evaluation, I want you to list me three of each state of matter that you can find in your house or at school (that's not listed in the video preferably).

Solid:

1.

2.

3.

Liquid:

1.

2.

3.

Gas:

1.

2.

3.

Lastly, just answer the following questions.

1. Solids have a fixed shape and volume.

      a. True

      b. False

2. What is H2O?

      a. oxygen

      b. water vapor

      c. an apple

3. Are the molecules in a gas dense, a liquid, or have the most space to move?

     a. dense

     b. a liquid

     c. has the most space to move

4. Name the three forms of H2O, as a liquid, solid, and gas.

______, _______, and ______________

Here is a little video with a song about solid, liquid, and gas!

I hope you learned more about the three states of matter and had fun exploring them!!
