Process

Materials:

There's A Monster In Your Book (book)

  • 3 pieces of paper for each student
  • Crayons/ Color pencils
  • Highlighter

Before reading There's A Monster In Your Book, I will show my students the front cover, back cover, and title page of the book.

I will then tell my students to listen for the words mischievous and naughty and when they hear them to raise their hands and I will have them tell me what those words might mean and afterwards I will tell them what those words mean.

Now, I will begin reading the book There's A Monster In Your Book

After I am done reading the story, I will ask my students questions.

"Does anyone know why the front cover, back cover, and title page of a book are important?" (because they tell you what the book is going to be about)  Great job!

"Can anyone tell me what the word mischievous means?" (causing trouble) Great job! The monster in the book was causing trouble because he would not go away.

"Can anyone tell me what the word naughty means?" (being bad) Great job! The monster in the book was not doing anything we told him to do.

I will now explain the activity, " I will give each of you three sheets of copy paper. You will put all three sheets together and fold them hamburger style and then bring them to me and I will staple them and then you will have a book. I want you guys to create your own book. Your book must have a front cover, back cover, and title page.

After the activity, I will have each student read their books to the class.

Evaluation

Recap, Review, Reteach:

I will make sure every student understands the importance of why each book has a front cover, back cover, and title page. I will make sure that they understand the new vocabulary words mischievous and naughty.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the front cover, back cover, and title page of a book are so important. Recognizing new vocabulary words from a book using context clues is also very important.

"Okay class, for homework I want you to bring a book from home to class tomorrow and you will get in front of the class and show everyone the front cover, back cover, and title page of that book." Great job today everyone! I will see you guys tomorrow, and do not forget to bring a book from home to class tomorrow!
