Introduction

health fads
Meat juice meat juice was first discovered in 1872 when a doctor made juice from meat for his sick wife who was unable to eat for months. This cured her and he decided to share it with the world. He got a large fortune from this.

Arsenic Products

Arsenic was used to make people's complexion better. It was told that take a little bit a day and you will look 10 times better. It was also considered completely safe. Although it's not now. I'd say you won't find make up with arsenic in it anymore.
Rattlesnake oil This was brought to America by Chinese imagrents. They used a Chinese water snake poison  and rubbed it on hurting joints. The Americans started using rattle snakes because water snakes were hard to find. This was all the way back in  1800 so I'd say there are better and more safe ideas for bad joints .
Lentil flour This was basically just corn starch and lentils. They would mix it with water or milk and it would cure constipation and any other disease in the bowels and digestive system. Who knows ... maybe it still works today.
Cocain  This was big when it was first discovered. It could help calm nerves, toothaches, hay fever, indigestion, fatigue and aches/pains. This was later found out to be a major problem When there was a big surge of addictions around.
Radioactive water This came into all the rage when radiation was discovered. It was considered safe because there are many hot springs with radioactive water in them. It was later seen terrible after people were dying from radiation sickness from taking 3 bottles a day.

Task

Task 2

health fad 1- rattlesnake oil...it was prometed by fraud salesmens.

The promoting of this product would of been sucselful because it i she very straight forward and informative. But the things that would be unsecsesfull are that there was no internet so it wasn't online meaning not everyone could read it. This is the fad I would most likely try because it could be just like deep heat cream. There was no major side effects for this except for it burned when you put it on.

health fad 2- meat juice... it was marketed by doctors of man satterwhite valentines jr.

This promoting of the product would of been successfully because it tells you in good detail what it is and how it helps. It would of been unsuccessful though because it doesn't tell you we're to get it or how much it costs. I would least likely try this because it would taste terrible. There were no side effects

Health fad 3- radioactive water... promoted by fraud sales men

The marketing of this is good because it has a good amount of information on how and where to get it. It is bad on the other hand because it is boring they could of added more colours and it would be more eye catching. Some people were dying few days later from radiation sickness.

Process

Task 3

thriving of the land fad... this fad was made up by Euell Gibbons. It was 1974 when he started this fad,he was a male. this health fad went for most of his life until he died from it. most of his life he worked in the land so he had to eat whatever he could find - including trees. there were no symptons except you were always hungry. it did not get what it claimed but some people lived healthy from it. there are no other simalar health fads.

running diet...this fad was made up by jim fixx. he was a 35 yr old male. he started this when he was very overwait and wasnt happy. it went for his whole life. there were no symptons. he got what he achieved but died from heart attacks and lung problems from running to much. I would most likely try this one but i wouldnt push myself to death like jim fxx did.

the cotton ball diet... there are no deaths from this but it is also very dangerous. this health fad was made from the media. it is basicly eating cotton balls to get rd of your hunger and making you skinny. the side effects of this are it getting stuck in your intestines, blockages threw your body, constipation and many more. this got what it achieved - weight loss, but many people got sick and hurt from it. i would least likely try this one because it is unsafe.

Evaluation

Fad 1: tanning bed

a tanning bed is something you lay in, that emits ultra violet radiations causing the tanning effect on skin. the people who are into these are the types of people that have to follow every trend to 'fit' in. they want to do this because there is a stereo type that tan skin is the only way to have pretty skin, which i don't understand because years ago people use to pay lots to have pale/light skin. side effects of this is bad sun damage which is skin cancers, and this means your skin ages very quickly. An interesting fact is that now in Queensland they might be putting a ban on tanning beds.

Fad 2: phentermine tablets

a phentermine tablet is actually an illeagle drug unless perscribed helping people to loose weight. the types of people who are into these are people who are not happy with their appearance. they do this because they don''t have the effort to get up and exercise and eat healthy so they take a drug that is actually very fatal for their health. side effects are having lots of energy and wanting to keep moving but as soon as it go away you are cranky have no energy and need to go back on the drug to keep going. And if you want to keep going it is working your heart way to hard which will be fatal in the end.  an interesting fact is that phentermine tablets are not aloud to be sold so i wonder how the doctors are giving them out?

Conclusion

What i have learnt so far about health fads....

i have learnt that health fads are diet like trends that tend to hang around for a period of time. health fads can and cant be healthy and good for you. most health fads are made up by people and celebritys. and normaly the crowd will follow whatever trends a famous person will. i have learnt to never try health fads unless told by a doctor because this way i know that it is safe and will not cause health problems. companies get people trying there health fads by using words like: i 'guarantee' this will make you look better or this is 'completely' safe even though there is no research to back them up. another marketing way it to use famous people because everyone knows them so if there doing it 'must' be healthy. these fads appeal to people because of there vanity and there ego because there want to get results to quickly and take the shortcut by doing dangerous health fads. there is really no 'stratergy' to being healthy, as science proves its 30% exercise and 70% diet so this means just eat a healthy and balanced diet and you will eventually reach your fitness goal. most people say that you have to go the gym constantly and eat once a day and only salads but that is not true. you dont have to do it like this you can enjoy it, it shouldnt be a health fad it should be a lifestyle that your happy with, that will fit in with your life for the lifestyle. alot of fad diets will hurt your health and metabolism, so the key to a sucsesfull fitness and happy lifestyle is to exercise sensibly and not hurt yourself and watch what your eating and try not to eat foods with lots of sugars and salts. even though doing these health fads gets rid of fat, as soon as your done with it- it will be put back on twice as fast. so i hope you understand my report and my reasons for this. thank you for reading.
