Introduction

Imagine that you and your group are guidance counselors in a school that is dealing with, not only a drinking and driving accident that has killed one of the nicest and most popular kids in school, but also with his friend who is dealing with survivor's guilt which may lead to depression.  The principal has come to you to develop a presentation for the staff and students on the topic of depression or teenage drinking and driving.  Your group can choose which presentation you want to develop, but it has to be informational, appropriate for high school students and provide steps to deter teens from drinking and driving or help those who are depressed.

Task

Your team has chosen one of two topics. You will use the links provided (on the Process page) to become experts on your topic- either depression or teen drinking and driving. You and your team will work together to create a Google Slide Presentation that will help the students deal with the issues in the school. By completing this WebQuest, you should achieve the following goals:

1) develop information about the effects of teenage drinking and driving or information about survivor's guilt and depression (including the signs of depression)

2) use the power of the Internet and other sources for advanced exploration

3) formulate an action plan to deter teens from drinking and driving or support/find help for those who are depressed.

Process

You will be working together as a group exploring websites that I have selected and other resources. Each group has their own task to complete and websites to use. I will need to know who in your groups of three will be gathering information and images and who will be creating the action plan.  There is a rubric in the Evaluation section of this WebQuest to show you how you will be graded.  I will be collecting your notes or looking at them on Goggle and giving you a separate grade for completion, along with giving you points for staying on task and completing the WebQuest and Google Slide presentation.

TEEN DRINKING AND DRIVING:

1. Gather information from the websites about teen drinking and driving to include in your presentation.  If you need more information for your action plan, you can see the guidance counselor(s) for help.  You can use a word document and save it to your Gaggle account to take notes or use the notetaking sheets that I have available for you.

2.  Find at least three images on Google or Bing for your Presentation that draw attention to the effects of drinking and driving such as accident scenes, funerals, etc.

**Remember to document the information that you need for citations on a bibliography packet that I can give you or at least document the URL (website) address, so you can get the citation information later.**

3.  Create an action plan to help deter teens from drinking and driving.  The action plan has to include:

-what students can do themselves to avoid drinking and driving or getting in a car with someone who has been drinking

-what students can do to prevent others from drinking and driving

-what parents can do to deter/prevent their children from drinking and driving and from getting into a vehicle with those who have been drinking

-provide contact information (name, address, phone, and website if applicable) for at least two organizations whose goal it is to help lower the rate of teen drinking and driving.  Mothers Against Drinking and Driving (MADD) is listed as one of the websites.  Your group can also look into Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD).

4.  Create your Presentation.

-Your information about teen drinking and driving should be given first in your Presentation and then your action plan.  Images should be included throughout as you see fit.

-Make sure to document your internet and image sources on the last slide of your Presentation.

DEPRESSION:

1.  Gather information about what survivor's guilt is, what depression is and the changes that people exhibit when depressed to include in your Google Slide Presentation.  Make sure to see the guidance counselor(s) for help in creating your action plan.  They have valuable information for you.  You can use a Google doc to take notes or use the notetaking sheets that I have available for you.

**Remember to document the information that you need for citations on a bibliography packet that I can give you or at least document the URL (website) address, so you can get the citation information later.**

2.  Find at least three images on Google or Bing for your Presentation that draw attention to depression such as someone who looks depress, someone who is alone in a dark room, etc.

**Remember to document the information that you need for citations on a bibliography packet that I can give you or at least document the URL (website) address, so you can get the citation information later.**

3.  Create an action plan on Goggle Doc for your Presentation so students can get help for themselves or others.  The action plan has to include:

-who to contact at school and/or at home so they can get help for themselves or others

-what supports the school has in place for those who are struggling with depression (see guidance counselor for information). Include name/title of support and description.

-what supports are available outside of school.  Provide contact information (name, address, phone, and website if applicable) for at least two organizations who help those with depression.  Some of these are listed on the websites that are provided for you.

4.  Create your Google Slide presentation.

-Your information about survivor's guilt and depression should be given first in your slide deck and then your action plan.  Images should be included throughout as you see fit.

-Make sure to document your internet and image sources on the last slide of your Presentation.

Congratulations!  It's not easy to understand subjects as complex as the Effects of Drinking and Driving and Depression. But, now that you have finished the WebQuest, all of you know a lot more about at least one of them. Nice job and be proud of yourselves!

Extra Credit:  How can you use what you've learned to see beyond the facts about your topic and into the grayer areas?  What other parts of the Effects of Drinking and Driving or Depression could still be investigated?  If you are interested, you can answer these questions in a brief response (half page minimum), individually written or typed.
