The Pentagon Papers were made by the Department of Defense. These papers are about enlarging the Vietnam War. The United States Department of Defense enlarged the Vietnam War without reporting this to mainstream media. The United States claimed to be sending men to train the South Vietnamese people to fight against the communist when in fact, they were sending in hundreds of thousands of men to fight with the South Vietnamese people. The papers were first brought to public attention in 1971 by the New York Times. They began publishing excerpts of the Pentagon Papers. "They systematically lied not only to the public, but to Congress." -New York Times. Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara started the Pentagon Papers in 1967. Daniel Ellsberg is the one who discovered these papers and shared the information with President Nixon's advisors. None were interested on acting upon the situation. There were charges pressed agaisnt Ellsberg for releasing the Pentagon Papers. However, the charges were later dropped after prosectuters investigating the Watergate Scandal found out that staff in Nixon's White House were ordered to discredit Ellsberg's word on the Pentagon Papers. The entire set of The Pentagon Papers were declassified and publically released in 2011.
