Synonym and Antonym
What is a synonym?
- a synonym is a word that has the same meaning or similar meaning as another word
- Synonym = similar
The words gigantic and huge are synonyms:
- Gigantic means huge or enormous.
- Huge means extremely large or enormous.
Synonyms can be used to add new or different words when you write.
- For example, huge and gigantic can both be used to describe the size of a big boat.
- The boat was huge. The boat was gigantic.
Examples of synonyms:
- afraid - scared
- true - correct
- simple - easy
- choose - select
What is an Antonym?
- an antonym is a word that has an opposite meaning to another word
- Antonym = opposite
The words build and destroy are antonyms:
- Build means to create or make something
- Destroy means to damage or ruin
Antonyms have different meanings and that is why they are the opposite.
- Sarah builds houses out of Legos.
- Tom destroys her Lego houses.
Examples of antonyms:
- arrive - depart
- easy - hard
- dirty - clean
- happy - sad

Directions: Using your own piece of paper, identify which sets of words are antonyms and synonyms. Place the words in the correct category.
