Sustainable Businesses in Canada WebQuest

Introduction

Welcome to the Sustainable Businesses in Canada WebQuest! In this online task, you will explore sustainable businesses in four key sectors: clothing, electronics, food, and furniture. Your mission is to identify and investigate sustainable businesses in one sector and gain a comprehensive understanding of their commitment to sustainability. You will explore topics such as eco-friendly production methods, ethical sourcing, waste reduction, and community engagement.

By the end of this task, you will not only have a deeper knowledge of sustainable practices within different sectors but also develop critical thinking skills and an awareness of the impact of your choices as a consumer. You will be equipped to make conscious decisions that contribute to a more sustainable future. Remember, the purpose of this task is not only to find sustainable businesses but also to share your newly-gained knowledge with your peers. Let the quest begin!

Task

You will be working in groups of four. Your task will be to research sustainable businesses and identify ONE in your assigned sector that you would like to share with your team and the class.

In your group, each person will be assigned one sector:

  1. Clothing: explore different brands that prioritize eco-friendly materials, fair trade practices, and ethical manufacturing. Investigate their efforts in reducing carbon footprint, promoting worker rights, and supporting social initiatives.
  2. Electronics: search for companies that have recycling programs, energy-efficient designs, and responsible disposal practices. Examine their commitment to reducing electronic waste and their efforts in promoting sustainable innovation.
  3. Food: research businesses that prioritize organic farming, sustainable packaging, and ethical sourcing. Analyze their efforts in reducing food waste, supporting local communities, and promoting sustainable agriculture.
  4. Furniture: look for businesses that prioritize the use of sustainable materials, such as reclaimed wood or recycled materials. Investigate their commitment to reducing deforestation, promoting sustainable design, and minimizing waste. Additionally, look into their involvement in social initiatives and efforts to create a circular economy.

Once you know which sector you need to research, follow these steps to complete your task:

  1. Look for Canadian companies that are considered sustainable for one or more reasons mentioned above.

  2. Take notes on the information you find in different articles and the company's website.

  3. Consider sharing your findings with family, friends, or classmates to raise awareness and encourage others to recycle responsibly.

  4. Share your findings and reflect on your learning.

Within your groups, ensure that each student has a unique sustainable business to research. Share your findings and collaborate to create a comprehensive presentation that showcases the sustainable practices, initiatives, and accomplishments of the businesses within your assigned sector. Each group will have the opportunity to present their findings to the entire class. At the end, you will write your personal reflection about your learning experience.

Process

Step 1: Group Formation

You will be divided into groups of four. Each group will consist of one student assigned to research a sustainable food business, one student assigned to research a sustainable clothing business, one student assigned to research a sustainable electronics company, and one student assigned to research a sustainable furniture company. Get together with your group members and decide who will conduct research on which sector.

Step 2: Individual Research

Each of you will conduct in-depth research on the assigned sector and specific sustainable business. Use online resources, articles, and company websites to gather information about the sustainability practices, initiatives, and accomplishments of the assigned business. Take notes and document your findings.

Step 3: Sharing Findings

After completing your individual research, you will come together within your group to share your findings. You will present a summary of your research, highlighting the key sustainable practices and initiatives of the chosen business. Have discussions to exchange insights and enhance understanding of sustainable practices across different sectors.

Step 4: Collaborative Presentation

Based on the shared findings, your group will create a presentation that encompasses all four sectors. Discuss and determine the most effective way to present the information to the whole class. Each group member should contribute their respective sector's information and work together to create a visually appealing and informative presentation.

Step 5: Presentation to the Class

Each group will have the opportunity to present their findings to the entire class. Deliver the presentation, providing an overview of sustainable businesses in the food, clothing, electronics, and furniture sectors. Showcase the sustainable practices, initiatives, and accomplishments of the businesses researched by the group members. Use visual aids, slides or a poster to enhance the presentation.

Step 6: Individual Reflection

After the group presentations, you will write an individual reflection on your overall experience and the significance of sustainable businesses in your sector. Reflect on the research process, the insights gained, and the importance of supporting sustainable practices.

Step 7: Class Discussion

At the end of this project, you will need to submit an electronic or a hard copy of:

  • your notes from your research
  • your presentation (either a poster or a power point file)
  • your one-page reflection
